Source code for a travel site.

Hello,
I’m looking into developing a domain of mine (allcheaptravel.com) into a travel website like expedia or travelocity. I have the html templates and can comprehend and design with html well. I made a model of my front page and put it on one of my servers at thegiftmix.com/allcheaptravel.html. I do however have a question on selling and acquiring plane tickets, hotel reservations, rental cars, ect. How do I set up my website so that people can search for a plane trip and rental car and hotel and choose which one is right for them? How would I set it up so that when the order is placed through us, we would automatically book what they wanted for them? So basically, from where do I find, and order the reservations once an order is placed? Are there any affiliate programs or programs in general that can setup and automate a travel website? All input is appreciated. Thanks.

@PeOfEoMar 27.2005 — Good question: This is not an easy thing to create, it is nothing for a beginner. It would first of all require server side scripting. Asp, php, jsp, cgi, asp.net, cold fusion, are all examples of this. The server must perform the searches. The searches would be through a database that resides on the server, so naturally the client cannot search it. Also the server must handle payment operations. You will need a lot of back end scripting, not just you server side language, you will probably need plenty of executable applications that will allow you to communicate with airlines and hotels and you are going to need a payment gateway. Since you are going to be handleing money I would say stay away from this if you are new to this sort of thing.

@the_treeMar 27.2005 — Firstly, learn some basics with dynamic content. Such as server-side includes, you'll find these make your coidng life a gazzilion times easier. Then try something like feedback forms, useful and apllicable when your doing somethings more complicated.

Once your more familiar with that you can start on searchable databases, this is where it gets really difficult.

Like PeOfEo said, this is not for begginers.

@DigimainsBizauthorMar 27.2005 — Other than having to script the site myself, are there any programs or reseller accounts, or anything that I can use to take care of this for me? I'm really serious about starting this business, but I don't have the knowledge to script the site from scratch by myself, so are there any scripts that I can purchase that are already pre-made?

@the_treeMar 27.2005 — Not on this scale no.

Lots of travel companies share databases, in fact there's less than 10 databases worth knowing about in the entire travel industry (I had to do a very boring report about this at school), each site and phisical has it's own special ways of dealing with those databases, which make that company unique. On all occasions, they spend hundreds, probably thousands on developing it.

@DamienMar 28.2005 — As the guys pointed out, it’s an ambitious project, especially when compared to the likes of travelocity or expedia. These are huge scale sites with huge budgets, and probably have an army of programmers on their full time staff.

If you want to dip your feet into it you could purchase a script for 140 bucks like the one at this link

It would be a good learning experience for the travel game.
