Server question

I am tired of crappy hosts but I dont want to pay money for somecompany to host me. I was thinking (just a little thought going around in my head) of getting my own server. I know a local store that has a used one for sale (used but its still in pretty good shape) The actual server isn’t too pricy, but what montly fees would I have to pay? I am going to get cable internet soon anyway so dont factor that in. Like do I have to pay a dns bill? What other bills do I have to look at? Anyone here use their own server and have some good tips or advice?

@DamienMar 09.2003 — To co-locate a server in a data centre is usually around $90 per month upwards. Watch out for phsical size, the $90 per month is usually for a 1U size server, if your server is 4U then you are looking at doubling the price.

The server software you buy should handle all your DNS, I would recommend Ensim. (Linux or Windows) is about $400 for an unlimited domain licence.

IP numbers here in Ireland are charged out at €5 each, however, I belive they are free in the States.

The only other cost would be backups or exceeding your monthly transfer allowance.

I would also suggest doing it with a cable modem at home first. Make all the mistakes in the comfort of your own home first before paying through nose at a data centre.

If your going to get a cable modem, you can use Easy DNS (which costs $5 per year for 5 domains). Works perfect with cable modems. Have a look at http://www.dnsmadeeasy.com/

Set up your server with e-smith server (linux) or Janaserver (windows) , both are free, and away you go.

Here's an example, I have an old box (500 Mhz with 256RAM) which is sitting over in the corner as I type. It's hosting 8 domains for friends of mine, mostly phpNuke. I would be interested if you could tell me in how long it takes for a page to download all the way over there in the states. try http://www.xviper.com

@PeOfEoauthorMar 10.2003 — Ok what exactly is the data centre? I have never heard of that. Why would I need it? By the way your page loads faster then other page but thats not very fast. I am sure it would be very fast on my home coputer but right now the network that I am on is pretty laggy because a lot of people are on the net right now. I am just going to use this for my site and maybe 2 friends in the future. I expect I will b on cable in 2 to 3 weeks.

@DamienMar 10.2003 — A Data Centre or sometimes-called web farms, house or host your physical server. Then you connect to it remotely. These centres usually have multiple T1 or T3 lines running into them so you have excellent connectivity. They also monitor each server and reboot it if required. You would only need a data centre if you are hosting multiple sites for commercial purposes, or have a high volume website (say 100,000 page impressions a month)

If you are doing it with a few friends, then wait for the cable modem. Get you provider to give you a static IP address if you can, but if not, there’s no problem, you can still run multiple websites with a dynamic IP.

I noticed from some of your posts that you a big into ASP. Have a read of the docs at http://www.janaserver.de . This is free server software, which works well with a server on a cable modem. I‘m nearly sure it has a section on serving up ASP sites.

@PeOfEoauthorMar 11.2003 — Now if I put windows 2000 or any other windows os on my server would it be able already to host asp.net or would that require extra software, also what about php, I know cgi can be a pain on an nt server but it would be sweet if there were an easy way I could host that too.

@DamienMar 11.2003 — ASP

You would have to load Win 2k Professional or Win 2k Server because you'll need IIS.

PHP

No problem there, there is also a sample php.ini file which you can edit and just drop into your windows directory or else use the windows installer. Download both from php.net

Perl

Download ActivePerl from the ActiveState website, just install it there's no editing to be done and it runs perfectly.

@PeOfEoauthorMar 12.2003 — Ok this new asp.net host is hard core awesome so Illput off on a server but I will keep my eyes peeled. This new host is powered by microsoft so I dont think they would have the wussy problems that hosts like brinkster have EUROPE.WEBMATRIXHOSTING.NET ALL THE WAY! FREE HOSTING FOR ASP.NET, UNLIMITED BANDWIDTH, AND SOOO MUCH ASP.NET FREEDOM, YOU CAN EMAIL, USE A GLOBAL.ASAX, HAVE CUSTOM ERROR PAGES EVERYTHING THAT BRINKSTER WONT ALLOW ITS THE BEST WEWEWEW. Its also ftp based uploading, so that makes my life a whole heck of a lot easyer.
