Advice on Finding Web Designer for New Biz

Okay so this is my first post on here, and am looking forward to learning from the community.

We are a brand new group fitness training studio (similar model to Orangetheory Fitness http://www.orangetheoryfitness.com/), needing a website, which can be integrated with a mobile application (the mobile app will be created in the future).

We are having a hard time identifying an inexpensive, quality, developer capable of completing the below project, and would like to know the best way to find someone capable of doing it for $7,000 or less (yes we understand this is fairly low cost). We are only looking for developers within the United States as we feel strongly they will have a better understanding of our needs from a branding perspective.

What is the best way to find a good domestic developer? We tried freelancer, but felt it difficult to trust most of those who responded, and pretty much all were foreign.

Since our knowledge of web design is minimal, and therefore our ability to accurately evaluate one is as well, we’d like to be able to using something like Yelp, to see client feedback. Is there a “yelp” for domestic web developers?

We were thinking of maybe using yelp and looking in cities that have a low cost of living, and thus will hopefully charge less. This seems terribly inefficient for multiple reasons, so any advice would be appreciated.

For those who are interested, here is the project brief and broad business concept:

Our primary customer are successful working professionals 27-40 years old who want to optimize their workouts and are willing to pay extra to have a trainer customize a workout specific to their body type and goal.

We are catering to a higher, but not premium-end clientele, and a membership will cost between $200-$250/month.

The website will be comprised of 9 sections such as “about us” and “class schedules” for a total of approximately 20 web pages.

We will need the website to integrate with Mind Body (https://www.mindbodyonline.com/) for our class scheduling, membership management, and membership purchasing. From what we understand, their APS is very easy to work with, and it is a frequently used by many major fitness studios, including Orangetheory Fitness.

We will have at least two videos that we would like to have playing on the website.

Members must be able to create profiles that store and track 13-15 data points such as body weight, goals (i.e. lose 5 lbs), etc.).

In addition the profiles must also have the ability to store member workout information such as the name of an exercise, the amount of weight used, and the number of repetitions performed. We then need to be able to apply an algorithm (which we have already created) that will automatically make workouts more challenging (i.e. increase the amount of weight lifted by 1% each week for a specific exercise). This will also create the necessity for administrative accounts so that we can manually make edits to member profiles when needed, and easily print out a members’ workout.

We plan to occasionally implement pop-ups, such as prompting a user to “download a free trial.”

Mobile device optimization is critical.

Down the road we will be creating a mobile application where members will be able to access their profiles and workouts. The ability to seamlessly build an app that links to this website is very important.

Here are some websites that we like the design of that cater to a similar demographic:

Yeah, those two things tend to be mutually exclusive. ?

@gregorylsfauthorJun 29.2016 — Unfortunately that's what we've found :-(

Any suggestions on where/how to find the lowest cost developers that are still high quality?

I was thinking of maybe yelping web developers in cities with a low cost of living in the US. Figure an A+ quality developer living in Detroit will charge less than a studmuffin in San Francisco.

This is terribly inefficient though, and I'd appreciate any advice.

@NogDogJun 29.2016 — You could try sites like elance.com and upwork.com. (I have no personal experience with them.)

If you're in a location with a sizeable enough developer population, you could search for users' groups and/or meet-and-greets where you'd have a chance to personally meet some candidates and establish a "real" relationship. ?

@tidingstrongJul 01.2016 — I just thought than in looking a web designer, by all means has a very good portfolio and indeed creative, understands your business and specifically your goal. It should be fit and is willing to design your preferred platform. Lastly, it should have an affordable pricing package.

@Nicola_SeabrookJul 01.2016 — Your program sounds awesome. However, for you to find a quality web designer, great deal of money is involved. Maybe, "terms" between you and the designer can solve your inquiry. Just my thought!

@Shane_PollardJul 02.2016 — Hi Gregory,

The challenge to find someone that truely understands what you want comes from more than just filling in a contact form on a website and it should be used more as a general starting point to see what you may want as a design. It is great to see you list the favoured designs on this post.

Its too bad I dont live in the US or I would of offered a web design consult to you ?

I hope you find a agency that can assist.

@3wCornerJul 07.2016 — There are a lot of developers you can whether locals or outside in your your country. For freelancers, you can look at upwork.com and elance.com but ask for their portfolio and references if any. Yes, it's hard to trust others but you have a choice to pick a good one.

Success!
