I’m new and I have a few questions???

Hello Everyone! I’m new to the webdeveloping thing. I just decided yesterday that I needed my own professional website and I’d like to do it on my own.
I was doing some research on the net and found this site. I’m pretty sure you all are considered experts compared to myself. Can someone please answer some questions for me????

First of all, I really don’t know how to get started but since I’ve seen so many websites on the net I figured it can’t be THAT hard. (I’m probably wrong) LOL!

I read up on how to get my own domain name and how to select a web host. (that seemed easy enough)
1st question: Are the really nice looking (professional) web-sites done in HTML, JAVA, or do I need to buy some fancy software??? (keep in mind that I took my 1st internet tutorials on HTML just yesterday. It seemed easy enough, but I don’t know how hard it may get) ๐Ÿ˜ฎ and I read that it may be the ancient way of doing things????? (I dunno)
2nd question: Should I just go out and buy a Websites”for dummies” manual??

Any help you can give is greatly appreciated.

@The_Little_GuyJul 10.2006 โ€”ย 1st question: all Sites are done in html/CSS/Javascript. There are server side programs that will produce these, but at some point all that will be seen for the user is HTML/CSS/Javascript. Every peice of code can be edited in Notepad/Notepad 2, Wordpad, Simple Text, Or you can buy some program.

2nd question: I wouldn't buy a thing, I would suggest these sites:

http://w3schools.com

http://w3.org

http://webmonkey.com/

http://htmlgoodies.com/

@thoughtcubeJul 10.2006 โ€”ย Some sites use Flash and/or Java, in addition to HTML/CSS/Javascript. Developing in Flash generally costs money; Java, not necessarily.

But, you probably shouldn't start with these anyhow.

@felgallJul 10.2006 โ€”ย
  • 1. Start with HTML and CSS

  • 2. Next add some Javascript

  • 3. After that you may want to look at server side scripting and databases (eg. PHP and mySQL or similar.

  • Flash and Java have fairly specialized uses and so are not used a great deal on professional sites unless the topic that the site covers requires it. Adding such things where not required make a site look very UNprofessional.

    @thoughtcubeJul 10.2006 โ€”ย HTML can't. You need something like PHP, Perl, Python, etc.

    @the_treeJul 10.2006 โ€”ย HTML doesn't do anything, it is simply formatted infomation sent to a browser. You would need some server-side process to interact with a database.

    @dandelionJul 10.2006 โ€”ย oh,thanks for replied.

    how about coldfusion?
    Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
    @the_treeJul 10.2006 โ€”ย I don't know much about ColdFusion and have never tried it, but AFAIK it can interact with many different database programs including Oracle and MySQL which are by far the most common.
