Constructing a researchable site

Hello everybody!

I almost know what to do or write to satisfy search engines as to tags such as <TITLE> & <META>, but there are a few point which are unclear to me in the endeavor to guarantee good search listing for my site, ie. I do not know how would search engines look for the matching keywords when encounter my site.
Suppose I have a site consists of 3 document files initially named:
purpose1.htm, purpose2.htm, purpose3.htm .

1- Must one of these 3 documents be named “index.htm” or “home.htm”?
2- Should I include the tags: <TITLE> & <META> with the required contents in every single document of my site, or only in the one named “index.htm” of them?

Please help me get rid of this ambiguity.

@j-khoaFeb 05.2006 — well, naturally your home page would be called the index. If you try naming it home.htm instead of index when you try the access your site it will just take you the directory of all you pages. As for the meta tags, I would put it on each of the pages., make sure they are different though.

@pcthugFeb 06.2006 — You [U]must[/U] have an index.html/default.htm page otherwise your site will be inaccessible to not just humans but also search engines.

You can however automatically redirect your top level domain (www.purpose.com) to an exact page, say (www.purpose.com/purpose1.htm), but please note; search engines do not like redirects - and may have trouble indexing your pages
