What are Hot/Real Links? Not something you grill

What do search engines consider as real/hot links for purposes of site ranking.

I have several directories I am considering listings on and wonder which ones really create links.

If I see anyting other than my URL in address box, is it a real link? If it opens inside their page is it a real link?

Thanks, as always

@the_treeDec 29.2005 — A hot link is a reference to a site from another, like using someone elses images/css files. Pretty much all links that a search engine can see are "real", including hotlinks.
