Check if page exist?

I’ve got a Javascript menu system which basically sends users to various pages depending on where they’ve come from. Works fine, except that in some cases the page relating to their menu choice might not exist. I want to pre-check a page’s existence and redirect to an alternative if necessary. I’ve done some searching on this and it seems that this is not possible using Javascript? I want to avoid server-side options as I’m delivering on CD-ROM. I’d appreciate some guidance, thanks.
