Help! Google Sitemaps

?

Hi,

I’m a very new webmaster and having difficulty submitting my sitemaps to Google.

My website is http://www.dna-insurance.com and http://www.dna-insurance.co.uk

I use ftp with editplus2 to update/change the website and phpMyAdmin 2.6.3-pl1 (MySQL).

You get given follow through instructions but I just can’t figure it out – case of brain meltdown! Can anyone give me a very understandable step by step guide as to what I need to do?

This gets you to the Google instructions https://www.google.com/webmasters/sitemaps/verify?hl=en&view=all&page=1&reverse=0

Help!

@LeeUDec 05.2005 — Sam,

Try using GSiteCrawler . It sets up everything you need and is easy to use. Then login to your Google account and go here.

That should be easier.

@mastrebligauthorDec 05.2005 — Thanks Lee. Still not sure I'm doing the right thing though. Only time will tell... I downloaded the gsitecrawler, amended the project to http://www.dna-insurance.com & .co.uk then I generated the files sitemap.xml, gss.xml etc. (5 in all) and dragged them in to my wwwroot folder in ftp.

I then went in to google sitemaps and added sitemap.xml for both .com & .co.uk

Does this sound about right? If not where am I going wrong?

Thanks for your help,

Sam

@LeeUDec 05.2005 — Try using: ftp://dna-insurance.com/

The Google part sounds right. They have a method on the site to valid the process.

Apart from this it has crawled my site, has all my URLs in the gsitecrawler database, I have the sitemap.xml.gss, sitemap.xml.gz, gss.xml, and 2 FTP notepad files in my wwwroot server in FTP. Do I need to change the names of the ftp note pad files to the ones Google gave me (eg GOOGLEc2dd7d92c3c2c16c.html)?

@EasyWebDec 06.2005 — hI i use gsitemap much easier and only 1 file to upload i'm not sure if this is why my sites seem to gain pr within 30 days or its just my good looks but i've used it on 4 sites so far that were sandboxed for ages and all three suddenly had a PR of 2 or better in under 30 days if you want it pm me for the download site.

@LeeUDec 06.2005 — The file that Google gave you should just be an empty one. It is for Google to validate the site. Also upload the file "sitemap.xml". That should be it.

@bokehDec 07.2005 — http://www.dna-insurance.com & .co.uk
That is certainly lowering your search engine ranking. Join one to the other with a 301 redirect. Don't submit both.
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@mastrebligauthorDec 07.2005 — How do you do that?! ?
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@bokehDec 07.2005 — Make a file with the following contents:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^dna-insurance.com$
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://dna-insurance.com/$1 [L,R=301]
Save it with the file name .htaccess (the leading dot in the file name is correct) and place it in your root directory.

@mastrebligauthorDec 07.2005 — And thanks...

so what exactly does this do? :rolleyes:

Well it's not working! Your on an apache server, right? Is .htaccess allowed on your server? Also check out the points in my email reply.

@bokehDec 07.2005 — Also there is something very wrong with the way your page displays in Firefox. It's like a staircase. And it doesn't validate. Google won't like that. By the way you are on a Microsoft-IIS/6.0 server so that code I posted won't work.

@mastrebligauthorDec 08.2005 — You'll have to bare with me - I'm a webmaster but have had no training, I've literally had to teach myslef HTML from scratch.

How can I fix all these problems?

I need to be explained things in layman's terms...

Sam ?
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@bokehDec 08.2005 — When you build a webpage you should start with a valid template:
<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01//EN"
"http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/strict.dtd">

<html lang="en">
<head>
<meta http-equiv="content-type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1">
<meta name="resource-type" content="document">
<meta name="description" content="">
<meta name="keywords" content="">

<style>
</style>

<title>
</title>

</head>
<body>

</body>
</html>
then using a combination of a text editor, validation and checking in firefox. Once your page works in firefox test it in IE.Make changes so it works in IE but after each change make sure it still validates and displays correctly in firefox.
