background color not cascading

I would think that both of the nested div’s would have a red background. They don’t. It is as if the first div is closed before the second div starts.

@JPnycNov 27.2005 — That's not what the 'cascading" in cascading style sheets refers to. It refers to the priority hierarchy of various ways of writing rules. Embedded style sheets will override external ones. Inline styles override embedded ones.
