? Hi !! I’m a bit new to the whole web designing scenario, but so far I have learnt HTML,CSS and a little JAVASCRIPT. My next aim is to produce forums and I have absolutely no idea of where to start!! If anyone could help me on this matter, it would be much appreciated…….thank you ?

@Stephen_PhilbinJun 26.2005 — Well to actually make a forum would require a server side language and a database. It's a big job even for those experienced with databases and server side languages. There's a good few forums already made though that you can download for free.

@muffinauthorJun 26.2005 — Thanks for the info, but could I pick your brains a little longer and ask.......do you know of any? I've been on the case for a while now and it's driving me crazy!!

@Stephen_PhilbinJun 26.2005 — Well which forum you use would depend on which server side language you have (if any) on your host. If you have PHP then you could use phpBB. I dunno what you'd use though if you had asp.

@invertedpandaJun 26.2005 — PHPbb is one of the better forum systems out there - installation is simple, it has a large community, security fixes generally happen quick, and there are numerous hacks (as in add-ons) for it. Plus, it's interface is quit similar to the forum software these forums use (vBulletin).

If you really want to code your own, there are a few PHP/MySQL cookbooks out there that walk you through a simple basic forum.. but honestly, I'd recommend just using PHPBB.

@Stephen_PhilbinJun 27.2005 — Aye. And phpBB doesn't have a god awful admin panel like vBullitin does. Yeuch.

@oddball7Jun 27.2005 — or if you want there is also a few companys set up that provide easy to use forums. ezboard.com and proboards.com are both very easy to learn how to use. although ezboard is generally better if you purchase the paid version proboards has nice forums that are free.

@ewomackJun 27.2005 — To get the most out of designing a fourm, learn the language so you can tweak whatever you want. Learn PHP for sure.

@muffinauthorJun 28.2005 — Thanks all, I'm learning PHP as we speak!! ?

@HellowMar 11.2009 — Personally, I prefer Forumotion.com. A lot of people say it's too easy but, really, I like the simplicity of it all. I've tried toggling with Invision and I don't mind it as an RP site itself but if I were to create a site of my own, I'd go with Forumotion hands down.

@MaydayMar 11.2009 — Um, well the previous discussion took place 3 years ago :eek:, so I'm sure there have been wonderous advances and new additions to the field in the interim.
