@DamienApr 01.2003 — If you die from lung cancer due to smoking ciggerates you have commited suicide . . .
If we were to say that the above was true, one could then imply that cigarette companies commit MURDER.

@Tim158Apr 01.2003 — Some people die from these things even though they do not smoke or drink. However, if someone smokes or drinks consistently, it is their own fault - so yeah i guess it is suicide in a sense.

PS. What does this have to do with web development?

@web-eagleApr 02.2003 — I've got another one for you. This will offend a LOT of folks.?

People who have diabetes (the “adult onset” type, not the genetic or “children’s” diabetes) did it to themselves. By a lifestyle of inactivity and improper eating, they literally beat-up their systems to the point that glands start shutting down. One of the growing movements right now is the consideration that diabetes may NOT be inherited, but rather that lifestyles and eating habits DO tend to run in families.

Having said that, I have to give tobacco and alcohol users a little slack. There’s so much garbage in our environment, just drinking tap water could easily qualify as self-inflicted poisoning.

And this thread has to do potentially with the health of web-developers, which could seriously impact the future of the web itself. So there!?

So, here I am driving along the road in my Ford POS, when out of no where this kid on a bike sees a stick on the road and swerves into my lane. Even though I was following the speed limit and in the motion of slowing down already anyways since there was a kid nearby, I intentionally hurt this child?

I realize that your next line after the one I posted states this as an accident, but the two statements don't work together.

I guess the point I'm making about this is that sh*t happens. Not everything is intentional.

P.S. But smoking is another case, I wasn't refering to that.

But you must realize another factor: many people are ignorant of their health and therefore do not know they are "beating-up" their system. So only if you inflict damage on your body willfully, you are not committing a suicidal action of any kind. Sin is a motive, not an action. The action is only the result of the motive.
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@tripwaterApr 02.2003 — Smoking is a decision (a stupid one or not) it is one in the same, a decision. With that said if this decision takes your life and you made it you say it is suicide.

Well then if a person makes a wrong decision say a stupid one like mentioned above and steps out in front of a car or even better decides he/she could beat a train... and loses, is this suicide?

They made a decision to do something right or wrong the intent is what states the classification not the judgmental onlookers opinion.
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@JonaApr 02.2003 — They made a decision to do something right or wrong the intent is what states the classification not the judgmental onlookers opinion.
Exactly my point. The intent, or motive, is what causes the person to commit the action. However, taking it too far proves that the person wanted to kill himself. For example: if the person wanted to beat a train, he would obviously be trying to use that as an excuse to kill himself because it is obviously impossible to beat a train. Although there are exceptions to some, such as people with mental disorders or that are insane, most of the time it is the motive that is the real problem; not the action. The action is only a result of the motive.

following that logic...

if you are running in the house with scissors...

fall...

(on the scissors)...

die...

does that make the manufacturer of the scissors guilty of committing murder?

(*DISCLAIMER : Running with scissors is not condoned, encouraged, or otherwise suggested. This includes while in the house, in someone else's house, while not in anyone's house at all, or in or out of any domicile or enclosure, pen, protected fenced-in area, unprotected un-fenced-in area, or other marked or unmarked area where cattle or small furry animals gather, graze, or otherwise occupy)

@havikApr 02.2003 — I got another one. Let's say a person gets biten by a dog, did the dogs owner do wrong and deserve to be punished? Maybe.

But what if the person jumped a 6 foot fence, and shot at the dog with a pellet gun? Kinda changes things a bit right? Then why the hell do juries and judges always find in favor of the person who got bit?

I guess what I'm trying to say is it would be nice if our intentions were important. However, people's opinions of what happens take precedence. Judging whether or not a person is suicidal is a matter of opinion because we can't comprehend that persons intentions.

I can harm my body, does that mean I'm suddenly suicidal?

@Chopper_WeeDApr 03.2003 — My Mother suthers from the mental Illness Bipolar Dissorder. If you met her you would not know it.

She is on medication and takes a perscription of about 5 pills a day.

Bipolar Dissorder Causes her emotion to go high where she becomes happy and easily excited to a real low where all that may pass through here head is walking into a train, or taking a packet of 40 Paracetomal Pills in one gulp. She strugles with every bit of saness to not do these things.

Does this make her suicidal?

To me, no.

Through out my life, I have had to visit the hospital several times just to spend xmas with my mother.

For the Past 2 years she has been at home with only a couple of breakdowns but im please to have her home in a sane matter.

My uncle jumped of a bridge about 3 years ago and took the easy way out of life because he couldnt deal with his stress.

I'm sad for his loss.

I dont know why I have told you these things, No-one in these forums has hurt my feelings or made me mad.

I dont know if there is a point to this post.

But writing this has made me think that the answer to the original question posted by code one is NO.

Suicide is a choice that becomes made. Smoking and Drinking is a choice made but not a choice made on suicide.

My Uncle choose to jump because he could no longer deal with his stress. My Mother has chosen to live and battle her inner demon.

@Compguy_PeteApr 03.2003 — I would agree with just about anything IF everyone who smoked or drank got lung cancer OR liver disease.

Both are sure fire ways to have a number of horrible side effects. I have made the choice at one time or the other to do these things however... As much as they are not for everyone to try or do, it's also the same reason why I shouldn't have to hear about how bad smoking is from the anti smoking people.

Something to keep in mind is that enough of anything will kill you.

I could list examples of what these things are but some may consider them inconceivable however consider how much vodka a person with liver disease had to drink in order to pickle their liver...

@khakiApr 03.2003 — FACT 100% of all NON-Smokers Die
Yes... this is true.

And... of that number... at least 38% of those people die of scissors... and of running-with-scissors-related deaths.

Scissors don't kill people... people who run with scissors kill people (usually themselves... which is a drastically high number... and an unusually peculiar way to go!).

The remaining 62%... oddly enough... die from eating paste.
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@khakiApr 03.2003 — Now you guys are just getting ridiculous
well... I didn't mean that 62% die immediately from eating paste. Sometimes it takes a while (often many years).

Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@lora_3677Apr 03.2003 — As much as I hate to admit this... I agree with Code One's statement about smoking and drinking as suicide.

As it has been pointed out, not everyone who drinks and smokes dies from cancer... but that is not the point. Not everyone who slits their wrists or pops pills succeeds either. So, maybe I would rephrase it, such as: "People who smoke and drink are guilty of <b>attempted</b> suicide."

My grandmother died of sorosis (spelling may be off, sorry about that...) and she never drank anything in her entire life. However, when she was younger she contracted some sort of influenza that eventually caused the condition.

I also have a friend who's wife has a heart condition that was brought on by a flu type illness. It attacked her heart and she can no longer work and is on the list for a heart transplant.

My point of discussion for the last two scenarios is this... If you are sick and someone contracts that illness from you, are you guilty of attempted murder or murder if the condition worsens in the other person to the point that it threatens their life or kills them???
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@lora_3677Apr 03.2003 — btw, Code One... I was only joking about hating to admit I agree with you. I sometimes forget that not everyone shares my sense of humor, plus it's hard to tell sometimes what the intention was when it is in typed format.

Yeah, I read the thread and this is exactly what you posted before. The point I was making was that this statement above the the other statements you make don't work together.

Paraphrase: "Anything that you do that is harmful...should be classified as intentional."

To make that statement, you can't cover yourself up and say:

Anything you do that is harmful or has been done to you, which is not intentional is of course un-admissible, and should be classified as an accident.

Paraphrase: "Anything you do that is harmful...which is not intentional...should be classified as an accident.

So which is it? From this logic, if I did strike the child with my car then the first statement says it's intentional, while the second says it's an accident. So, all I was trying to say was if you're going to say something, say it. Don't give yourself options.

That's all, no disrepect intended here either. And you explained it a lot better in your more recent post so there's no beef from me anymore.

You are only guilty of suicide if it was your intention to kill yourself by whatever action you indulge in. I can't imagine someone saying:

I agreee, It is only suicide if you have purposly chosen to kill yourself.

Example. I, myself have chosen to smoke, but I have no intention to kill myself in any form or matter. Hence, If I die of lung cancer at an old age, It will not be suicide but a Natural Death from a bad lifestyle.

@web-eagleApr 09.2003 — Or how about:

100% of all suicide bombers take their jobs WAY too seriously!!

I was enjoying this thread. What a shock to find out somebody wasn’t happy with the way it was going.?

I’m still looking forward to seeing a funny/fake statistics site.

P.s. Khaki to block someone you have to go and click on the User CP button, and then click on the edit ignore list link, once there type in: Code One. Move your mouse down and click on the update button to save your configurations. That should do it.

Good Luck

@JonaApr 09.2003 — Oh yah, bother. Go to http://cmm.bravepages.com there are two links on that page. They link to the text files. Stupid server....

@havikApr 09.2003 — You could use my second signature as a funny statistic. Well, only funny to those to get it.

@lora_3677Apr 09.2003 — Jona, some of those saying are hilarious... there are alot of them, too. ha ha.

@khakiApr 09.2003 — ummm...

i've been a little bad about responding to Jona

(not on purpose though)

i've got more than a few irons in the fire (most of them self-inflicted.. so i'm not looking for mercy or pity or anything), so you guys need to push me a bit and maybe we can get something rolling (for real. as a goof. why not?!)

anyway... i'm not ignoring you guys (well... except someone who will remain nameless. lol) so don't let me kill the momentum here.

i hate to be left out of anything (thus... almost 500 posts! )... so you can count on me - eventually, anyway).

@JonaApr 09.2003 — Khaki, I love the way you always say funny stuff in the parenthesis. That just cracks me up the way you talk... (No offense.) ?

Anyways, I've asked both of you about 12 times, and I haven't gotten an answer... I need to know what the site should look like. :o Should it be multi-color? Should it use lots of images? Should it use lots of tables? If so, borders or non-borders? Should it be a single color-theme? If so, which color? :p

I mean, I can do it in red, white and blue... But what should the name of it be? Oxy_Morons_Online? :p

@khakiApr 10.2003 — Yikes... Jona is getting belligerent!

Am I gonna hafta block you too!

(just kidding... as always, sweetie ? )

(hey! new avatar? hmmm... I've always pictured you as a desktop... but the whole "mobility thing" makes for a cooler image. Plus it re-inforces the "prison on the weekends" aura. sweet!)

Umm...

And I may be blocking...

but apparently there continues to be some new "activity"... so perhaps I'll bail out of here and start a new thread which is independent of this one

(aka: a safe haven)

I'll call it "ponderous".

This way, only those who are interested in our topic need to visit and express themselves.

(umm.. note to "you know who": it's time to respect boundaries. You called a truce once. Please respect that now)

Ok. I'm done here. I'll see the rest of you at "ponderous".

not letting the door hit me in the *ss as I leave...
