subdomains same site?

Do search engines think of subdomains as part of the same site or as distinct sites?

i.e. for ranking purposes, is it better to create pages as:

[url]http://meaningfulWord.mysite.com[/url]
[url]http://otherMeaningfulWord.mysite.com[/url] etc.

or

[url]http://www.mysite.com/meaningfulWord.htm[/url]
[url]http://www.mysite.com/otherMeaningfulWord.htm[/url] etc.

or does it not matter?

Generally speaking from the average hosting company, the Subdomain will be considered as it own seperate domain name from a Search Engine perspective.
