Linking Issues w/ IE6 and XP

Hi all. New member here.

Is anyone out there aware of an issue of not being able to link or view local webpages due to a security patch with XP Service Pack II?

Long story, but I’ll keep it as short and uncomplicated as possible.

We discovered this issue while designing an interactive CD Rom. There are links to the web and links to web pages on the CD itself. Moreover, just as a web designer I store my web pages on my CD drive where I preview them via Dreamweaver before uploading them.

Well, the weirdness began. I was unable to get any of the links that pointed to the local pages (the pages stored on the CD) to work. My co-designer who uses WinME had no trouble at all. Further experimenting showed us that anyone playing our CD on a PC with XP and IE6 could not get the local pages to work. In Firefox, Netscape, on WinME, Win2000, etc there was absolutely no problem.

As I say, I also couldn’t preview my local pages on my C Drive anymore. The links were simply dead.

FINALLY, after three weeks of hair pulling we found someone from Mircosoft who simply explained this was a security feature in the newest XP Service Pac. I’m not totally clear on why or how this feature prevents issues, but I’m sure aware how it prevents previewing local web pages.
He acknowledged it was a problem for developers and said there was just now a lot of complaints coming in.

Believe it or not, he gave us the antidote too. We had to insert a line of code into every single web page that essentially makes it appear the page is being read from the Internet, not the local machine.

It worked. Now everything is fine.

Here’s the line of code the guy from Microsoft gave us:
“<!– saved from url=(0014)about:internet –>

But we wonder if anyone else out there is having such troubles.

Thank you,
Ed

Neat! Thanks!

I had no idea... that's odd, I too cannot see any reason for blocking

local page links... maybe... nope.
