Pointing a New Domain to Your Old Domain

I’ve seen some websites that have more than one domain name, yet they all go to the same place. How do you do this?

@toicontienNov 03.2008 — You would need to read the terms of use for the search engines. Usually they will have some sort of "webmasters" section of their site that better explains what search engine spam is.

Many companies have several domain names registered, and route all of them to one web site. Say a company is called "Foo Associates and Son". They have fooassociates.com and fas.com going to the same website. Maybe they have "FAS" on a lot of their printed material and are also known as FAS, so people might punch in www.fas.com. Foo Associates and Son want to account for this so they register two domain names that point to the same website, rather, they have fas.com redirect to fooassociates.com.

To me, that is perfectly legit and not search engine spam, however, if you are registering multiple domains for one web site to have a greater chance of being seen on the search engines, then that might fall into the "spam" category.

Is your company or web site known by more than one name? If so, register a domain name for each variation of the company name and redirect them to one web site.

@toicontienNov 03.2008 — A perfect real world example is www.generalmotors.com being redirected to www.gm.com. On top of that, www.thebanditrun.com is redirected to a group page on Motortopia, a social network for motor enthusiasts.
