Is my domain name well choosen?

Hi there,

I bought this domain name redcodestudio.com, that was intented for two purposes: one to create a webdesign company for me, and the second to create a webdeveloper and flashdeveloper helping site and forum like this one, but for portuguese users (I’m not competing with webdeveloper.com, I wish… :p )

RedCodeStudio.com = RED (comes from my other nick name and my favorite soccer club shirt’s color S.L. Benfica) + CODE (code for webpages, scripts, etc) + Studio (webdesign, grafism, ilustrations, animations, flash)

Is my domain name well choosen? Does it recall when someone hears it a web developer community?

Or do you think I should go and buy another name that contained words more directly concerning the topic of site web and flash developer?

Or it is easy to remind and appealing?

By the way do you think that if I buy a domain like for example webdeveloper. xxx (else from .com) does webdeveloping include in your thoughts flash developing also, or should I buy webandflashdevelopers (too big).

What do you thing and suggest?
Thank You!

@Compguy_PeteApr 09.2005 — ya gotta remember how many sites are named something totally unrelated or even a made up word?

So don't count on the name/URL alone.

A quick search found these other 2 domains open

redcoded.com

codedinred.com

I do believe the word studio may have issues for you.

RED could also be used as in corrections or hot.

@gimbrasauthorApr 10.2005 — but studio means that the site has somethin related to animation, and redcode could also be the coloured colour for PHP when you edit PHP codes in Dreamweaver.

?

thanks!

@gimbrasauthorApr 12.2005 — But tlaking also about search engine ranking, if someone as a domain like webdeveloper.com, and an user search for "webdeveloper" which site comes up first?

WebDeveloper.com. Because for search engines the domain name will be the first thing it will look for. I think.

If I search for my site the only time google displays the results is when I search for the domain name itself, otherwise it does not find it.

thank you (Obrigado)

ya your site is not well indexed and you have to get an SEO. contact an seo or get some one do this work for u.

it is difficult to reach on top, for an particular keyword, so get onto sponsered listings on google for a while.

@Keiron_GraffieMay 10.2005 — 0% = ?

100% = ?

  • * redcodestudio.com = 0%

    codes.com & studio.com = 100%

  • * fun.telemovies.com = 29%

    fun.com, movies.com & tele.com = 100 %

    @sparqMay 10.2005 — In english he is saying the domain name choice stinks. ?

    Personally your "choice" is all about advertising... take a look at Google, who the f*ck would have thought "google" would become an everyday word. Think about the first time they told the domain name idea to someone, I bet they laughed their butts off - but look who is laughing now!

    There is WAYYYYYYYYyyyy more then just the domain name, the domain name itself will only generate about 0.25-1% of your traffic by people typing in stuff into the browser bar, probably even less then that now because of peoples new awareness of going to "malicious" sites -- and in your case, it will generate 0% traffic, because the domain name is too long, and rather unrelated.

    @gimbrasauthorMay 13.2005 — well that's the name I choosed lol, now I'll have to pay the consequences.

    even tough I think it is not so bad. It is a bit long yeah but I wanted it to have code and studio to make people think as soon as they heard it it had something to do with codes and studios.. ? and it had to take the "red" in front of it because it is the company name.

    Maybe one day I'll open a web design studio that' why I choosed these words.

    toonboomstudio = 13 characthers

    redcodestudio = 12

    and toonboomstudio is famous

    yes I was inspired with that name

    now I'm thinking in a new project that will have a short domain name "nofuturo.com" meaning "in the future.com"

    also as google, prior to that search engine was born, we had here in Portugal a search engine called www.sapo.pt sapo=frog, that was nothing to do with searching

    you're right one must choose one cool name and try to make famous

    - - - -

    Edit
    -----

    the issue is that is better, for me at least, to have something in that name related to the site content. If that happens making it famous will become easier becuase people when they see the name already know what the site is about.

    thank U

    @gimbrasauthorMay 23.2005 — What makes a good domain name?

    It's good if your domain name is same as name of your website, corporation name, brand name, web content etc. Domain name should have meanings, be easy to remember and type correctly.

    About the length of domain name, there appears to be some disagreement about whether a long or short domain name is better. Short domain name is easier for human to remember and less prone to typos, while long domain names that have your site keywords in them have an advantage for search engines robots thus fare better in a number of search engines.
My company name is RedCodeStudio, and as it reads in the quote long domain name have my site keywords.

    @rebarJun 19.2005 — Sounds like you've already chosen to use the name. Have you already started company formation proceedings using the name, ordered stationery of any kind, or done more than initial web designs using the name? If so, you might want to stick with it.

    It helps tremendously to have a domain name that includes words that actually describe what you do, from both SEO and marketing perspectives. But weigh that against finding a name you truly like and feel isn't too generic. To reiterate what others have said, any name can become a great name, with the right push.

    I would concentrate on the following:

  • 1. Personality: If you're going to use relatively generic terms in your company name, you need to put extra work into the logo design and website copy to make sure that your company's approach to business and personality are immediately apparent. A snappy tagline does a lot towards establishing your company personality.

  • 2. SEO: Links, keywords, tagging, you know the drill.

  • 3. Marketing: Remember the movie Glengary Glenn Ross: "ABC - Always Be Closing!" I'm assuming you won't have a huge marketing budget, which isn't fatal -- it just means more work on your end to build your brand. Get referrals from clients, write articles about web design, post your sites for review, etc. Word of mouth is a tough taskmistress and needs constant attention.

  • Whenever I need to name a company or product, I give myself a few days to mull any name over. I talk to friends and colleagues to get their take on it as well as to see how it feels when I say it. Mock up your business cards and see what the name looks like in print. Before you absolutely commit to a name, you're still on the market, so to speak, so keep brainstorming.

    If you're not using name suggestion to brainstorm, DO! I absolutely recommend DomainsBot as the best option out there. It's free, and it actually yields good, interesting results. Try inputting some of those keywords you've come up with to describe your business and what you offer.

    Best of luck to you -- naming is rarely an easy task, especially when you've got to find a name with an available .com domain!

    @DNamesJun 24.2005 — Is my domain name well choosen? Does it recall when someone hears it a web developer community?
It's not a bad name but CodeRedStudio.com would have been more naturally memorable, more easily brandable. Unfortunately, the name's taken. :o

    Three words mean more possibilities of making mistakes or getting the domain confused with another site. CodeRedStudio is a perfect example.

    If someone visits your site for the first time, likes the info and wants to return later. Assuming they didn't bookmark your site, would they still remember how to find you. Would they be typing CodeRedStudio...StudioRedCode ...?

    IMO, you should get a simpler name. Two words, if possible, that contain your keywords. You can still use your RedCodeStudio as your company name. And redirect your other domain to it.

    @mdoignyAug 24.2005 — If your site is in portugese, use the portugese TLD (pt).

    And use the <html language="pt" (or whatever) tag.

    No need to advertise your site in the english community.

    That's one of the more important lessons i've learned at SEO sessions.

    Most visitors to your site will come through search engines, and your site will never show up favorably against US companies.
