to combine <hr> and &larr;

I would like to combine a line drawn using <hr> and an arrow made using the &larr special character. If I use it in the following way :

<TABLE width=”100%” border=”0″>
<COLGROUP><COL width=”2%”></COL><COL width=”98%”></COL></COLGROUP>
<TR><TD align=”RIGHT”><FONT face=”arial” size=”6″><B>&larr;</B></FONT></TD>&nbsp;
<TD><HR align=”LEFT” size=”2%” noshade=1 color=”black” width=”50%”></TD></TR></TABLE>

there is a gap b/w the arrow and the line.
Somebody please help.

@the_treeMar 15.2005 — Well that's from either your cell padding or margins but please please don't do stuff like this with tables.

For ASCII art the <pre> tag is more appropriate, although the concept is inadvisable.

@PGariesMar 21.2005 — I think your best bet is to use an image. Connecting an <hr> element to a piece of text and expecting it to line up correctly 100% of the time (provided you could get them to do so in the first place) won't be reliable since the character and element are subject to browser interpretation, user-specified font sizes, and what fonts the user has installed whereas an image is the same in all of these situations.
