@ray326Sep 15.2004 — I saw on /. today the FF is now almost 20% of the browsers out there now and IE is down to something like 57%. Here are the stats. Note this is probably a sophisticated user base so YMMV.

@rhsundergroundSep 15.2004 — so if firefox's campaign is "spread firefox," would IE's be "smear IE?" or maybe, "you can't spell 'IE sucks' without IE!"

@johndoe190Sep 15.2004 — This is great the quicker we can get to actually using some good standards compliant techniques that we should be using the better. Down with IE is say.

@Stephen_PhilbinSep 16.2004 — I've been tempted for a long time now to slap a "Best viewed at any resolution on any browser other than IE" notice on the CMS I'm working on. Slap it in the footer with a Link to standards compliant browsers.

@Stephen_PhilbinSep 16.2004 — I'll most certainly offer up nice looking image links to better browsers. Of that there is no doubt. Although if I do add any text like that I think I'd likely be a little more subtle than that.

@pawkySep 17.2004 — lol, why be more subtle? ;P also, what is some of the work you have done? i have been curious as to what u have done ? thx ?

@PeOfEoSep 17.2004 — we don't need to kill ie. We just need to teach the guys who design it, the ie team at ms, a lesson. Make your browser more secure, and make it better to browse with (tabs, popup blocking, more control over settings for example: turning on and off java script). We can only hope for them getting a box model more like the other browsers. Atleast we can teach other web designers about accessibility though. If ns/gecko browsers become big, like maybe even only 20%, they will have to design pages that look good for those users. I would say the numbers on that site are optimistic though. Yes more tech savy users will have a better browser, but lets look at all the users

http://www.thecounter.com/stats/2004/September/browser.php

I have gotten about 10 people (non tech savy) using firefox. A few teachers, a few family, a few friends.

@davidbrentSep 17.2004 — Doesn't having to design for other browsers make Web Development more complicated and more enjoyable? Setting a target to work in other browsers than Internet Explorer adds a whole new side to development, it also gives you a step up...?

I just think if every browser was the same, it would be more boring designing one for all.

Best Wishes,

David

@davidbrentSep 17.2004 — But i am all in support of spread the word. I have sent around 60 email to friends and relatives i think will understand the project asking for their support.

@DaveSWSep 17.2004 — IMO while Microoft continues to ship Windows with IE then nothing is going to remove IE as the biggest browser. The average user expects their computer to be completely working out of the box, so they will not be heading over to download another browser while they see no benefit to it. After all, tabbed browsing is a matter of taste, and security flaws aren't advertised on the box.

The only real hope is that Microsoft will note the effect designers can have by promoting firefox and bring their browser up to date.

@DaveSWSep 17.2004 — <off topic>Hey David Brent, why have you got 2 links to 1976 design in your sig?</off topic>
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@mike444Sep 17.2004 — new computer buyers should request IE not be pre-loaded onto their computer. That'll fix 'em! ?

@Paul_JrSep 17.2004 — I'm not downloading FF 1.0. I thought Mozilla is trying to advance standards compliance, not support crappy IE-proprietary code. I'm disappointed with the "undetectable" document.all support.

Well it could be two reasons, maybe because as a fellow Englishman, i feel he deserves a little emphasis onto his weblog giving the English online community a little of a boost. The second reason is that i mistakenly put it twice because i was desperate to make sure i had it in there...

The latter defeats the former im sorry to say. But maybe i wont change it..

Best Wishes,

David

yes, when my sig said "My latest site, now available in VAILD," i had no intent of spelling it wrong, but when i thought about it, it was deliciously ironic, so i kept it.

@DaveSWSep 18.2004 — I discovered quite an interesting site today: http://browsehappy.com/ - basically presenting the options other than ie, together with some neat promotional banners.
