Where do I get Linux from?

I need to download Linux, as I plan to use it on my computer. I cannot, however find WHERE to download it. I see all these “distributions”, but no clear indication of which I should be downloading. I intend to run a personal server off of it for webdev testing. Can anyone provide me with a link to the “distritution” I should be using?
Thanks,
Dan

@buntineJul 01.2004 — You get it from redhat.com

http://www.redhat.com/apps/download/

Regards.

@The_CheatJul 01.2004 — http://linuxiso.org is good place that tells you about different distro's of linux and shows you where to get them and how to get started

@PeOfEoJul 01.2004 — if it just for testing why not run the server from windows? I mean I am going to have a suse partition with mono when I get another hard drive... but that is to test mono.

Cuz I only have 64MB RAM, so it runs windows like crap. And I can't get more RAM, because all the slots are filled up.

BTW, is it possible to substitute your current RAM sticks or larger ones? By the reaction when I asked at Geekz(local computer store), it didn't sound like it was possible, but I don't see why it couldn't be done...

@Daniel_TauthorJul 01.2004 — So, if I understand correctly, after I download the "images", I will need to burn them to either a CD or a DVD? Cuz if that's the case, I can't do it cuz our only burner is busted...

Because Linux is a better server platform. That's why.

what kind of ram are we talking about, motherboard, what? Might be hard to find the proper stuff depending on how old it is.

You'll either need to get a friend to burn it, or have one of us mail it to you (I'd be glad to if you need)

@PeOfEoJul 01.2004 — I just got the files, had to put them into an image, and then burn that image as a bootable cd.

The computer itself is very old (not sure of an exact date, but it is a Compaq Deskpro 2000), and I'll take a looksee right now and see if I can find out what kind it takes...

And Sam, thanks for the offer, but I think I can probably get my friend to burn it for me.

LOL. Well, it appears I have four sticks of 16MB EDO RAM. How hard is it to find that?
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@SamJul 02.2004 — saw this at my local wholesaler:

Memory 32 Meg 72 Pin Simm EDO - 28.80

which means for 120 dollars you could double your memory, but its definately not worth it. just leave it at what it is IMHO

@PeOfEoJul 02.2004 — I got a motherboard with a pentium 2 on it and 128mb of ram for free yesterday. At a building down town a guy was trashen it, perfectly good, so my neighbor grabbed it. I also got a free gigabyte p4 motherboard with an intel 845 chipset, hadn't even been opened, brand new. I got another 200 watt power supply (have 2 spare 200s now). All free, all work. When I get another hard drive that pentium 2 is going in a cardboard box and running dedicated. Its a 450mhz and has 128 of pc133 sd, what a steal.

@David_HarrisonJul 02.2004 — My grandma has a Compaq Presario 2000 (I think it's 2000), she got it in '99 and it has a 395MHz PII. She got it upgraded to a 20Gb HDD (the most it would take) and 128Mb RAM (the most it would take).

It's totally not worth upgrading that PC though, even if you could find the parts it'll run fine on 64Mb of RAM and it would just be money going to waste.

A friend down here had a source for pallet loads of full up systems like that. He wanted to know if it would be worth building a big linux cluster out off them. I told him he couldn't afford the air conditioning. 8-)

@ray326Jul 02.2004 — Daniel, if you're still reading this, you can find several linux distros that will boot from floppies. Obviously these will not need to be burned on CDs for installation. With 64M you'll need to stay away from the mainstream distros; they approach Windows in their memory needs.

@Daniel_TauthorJul 02.2004 — Thanks ray, but I'm just gonna have to face the truth, this computer SUCKS. I think I'll give this one to my brother and build one of my own, with decent components. It will make a nice little summer project, I think.

@ray326Jul 02.2004 — It can be a lot of fun working in a constrained environment like that. I used to do embedded systems and Apple ][ stuff so I kinda get a kick out of it.

@PeOfEoJul 02.2004 — I had an apple II, I had this awesome maze game for it. That was back in the day when all of the good titles came to mac. :rolleyes:. Anyone ever played elite, space invaders, manic miner, or other classics? ?

Try installing linux on it, its kind of hard to do. Try putting any os but what came with it on there (unless you are upgrading the os from the one that came on it). Infact, try getting on ethernet, unless the mobo has pci slots you are on 56k, fat chanse getting an isa ethernet card. 486 is great for running a win 98 server w/ pws :p But nothing else will really fly (plus it would lag like a mofo).

Nothing; as long as you really need all that power. ?

@DaveSWJul 03.2004 — Another alternative to downloading the iso images is to buy the cds from someone else who has downloaded them.

I use www.efusian.co.uk but they're UK based. There should be American equivalents though. You pay £3 to £4 and get all the cds ready to install. It's easier than downloading them I think.

but then you have to wait for the cds to get there which is more of a hassle IMO.

@DaveSWJul 05.2004 — next day delivery.

It was quicker than downloading it at the speed my connection was running that day.
