Picking and Installing ASP

Ahhhkay, so I expect (and hope) PeoFeo to reply to this thread. Well, before we get any competitions going on here between languages, let me just state that I do none of my web development for money. All of it is a hobby for me. That said, I’m looking to increase my language diversity. I’ve got (X)HTML down pat, I understand perfectly CSS, and can read/write JavaScript. A few months ago, I picked up PHP, and I’m still very much active in learning it. However, a recent encounter with Java has inspired me to at least become more familiar with other languages and their syntax.

So I’ve decided I’d like to play around with ASP a little. I’m not going to/can’t use ASP on my web server, so I’m going to be using my personal PC. Running Windows ME, an Apache 2.x server, and MySQL 4. Now, Peo, I know that there is this “ASP Classic” and “ASP.NET”. So my question is, where can I find information on these languages, which one should I meddle with, and how can I install it on my system?

@PeOfEoJun 09.2004 — Well, asp and asp.net are very very far from being the same thing. Asp.net and asp run very differently. Asp.net has so many advantages over asp classic, so when businesses (which are always slow to move) start to move asp.net developers will be in very high demand. Asp right now is the thing to know in the business world, but I can see the move starting, company by company have .aspx pages all around their sites. Asp.net can use vb.net, which is like a pimped out visual based, it can also use c# which has a syntax similar to that of java and php, asp.net can also run with c++.net which is a pimped out c++, and j# which take a ton of java syntax, so for our purposes it is java. So no matter what syntax you are comfortable with you can find something you like. C# and Vb.net are by far the most popular though. I prefer to use vb.net myself, even though if I wanted to I could quickly pick up c# because of my java experience. Here is a good thread to analize the differences between asp and asp.net http://www.webdeveloper.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=29318

Asp is still good to know, Infact I enjoy playing around with it from time to time and have some asp experience under my belt, but if you learn asp classic now you will be using the older ms technology.

Asp.net is free to use, you can do it in any text editor. Personally I use dreamweaver myself for the scripting. It is preferable that you be on a windows server (iis running). w2k or w2k3. But asp.net will run on a linux server too, with the mono project. Vb.net and C# are supposed to be completely supported from what I have heard. I plan to test this one of these days when I get my other box and put suse linux on it. But you are not going to find many commercial web servers running linux and asp.net with the mono project. To run a testing server for asp.net on windows you can either install iis or cassini (free) http://www.asp.net/Projects/Cassini/Download/Default.aspx?tabindex=0&tabid=1

cassini will not fly for running a website though, it is geared for remote testing purposes only, then you need to download the .net framework http://asp.net/download-1.1.aspx?tabindex=0&tabid=1 . For asp you can install iis or pws.

If you use asp.net there is a pretty good free editor out there http://asp.net/webmatrix/default.aspx?tabIndex=4&tabId=46

it is called web matrix. It has auto complete, syntax hylighting, its not bad.

There is also free ms sponsored asp.net hosting at http://europe.webmatrixhosting.net

for developers to learn.

Asp.net can work with mysql, but I do not use mysql. If you use wmh, they provide you with mssql space, you can a bunch of things to control your mssql server data base, from the built in editor in web matrix, the online tool at web matrix hosting, microsoft access remote data projects, enterprise manager, so on and so fourth.

@MstrBobauthorJun 09.2004 — Argh, so my Windows OS is too old for .NET? What would be the purpose of downloading the framework if I can run the pages? Ack, always have to make things difficult, the internet does.

@spufiJun 09.2004 — Well, I will just point out that I'm not going to say "That's Microsft for you," or "Microsoft sucks." Nope. I'm not going to say those things at all. :p

good, lol. You can download the framework, i encourage it. It will allow you to use cassini and web matrix. But asp.net will not run on iis on me. I still think it will with cassini, that was the point of making cassini. You would not want to run a production server from anything pre ntfs anyway. The performance would by abysmal. fat32 server... yuck.
