Subdomain For Development Site – Canonical Tags – Best Option?

We have a website in the following format – www.oursite.com ; however, we also want to have a development subdomain to complete various updates in a development/testing environment to ensure they are functioning properly prior to completing updates to our live site. To avoid duplication by indexing, would it be best to set our subdomain up with canonical tags that point to the main domain, or would this not work properly?

@brad_jonesJun 21.2016 — Are you planning on your development/testing environment to be public? Why would you put your development environment into the search engine?

@3wCornerJun 22.2016 — yes your right. You need to have a subdomain where you can see all the development updates and bug fixes before applying the changes to main production site.
