New web developer with questions

Hello

I new to here and web development/design. I am 29 married with a kid. I have taken a html/css class and am starting school in the fall for Computer Science. In the mean time I got two books once for html/css and one for java script/jquery. And am going to build some websites for myself just to build experience. I have a couple of questions.

  • 1.

    Is it best I work on one web site of my own and just make it bigger and better? or multiple smaller sites?

  • 2.

    Should I buy a domain name or just use a free one since this is for practice?

  • 3.

    Should this site be the start of my portfolio?

  • 1. Probably some of each: variety is good for learning, but adding on to and re-factoring something to add features and improve it will also teach you things.


  • 2. You can do everything with a local web server running on your PC, either via installing something like XAMPP on your PC, or running it in a VM (virtual machine -- more complicated to get going, but good to learn ? ).


  • 3. Only if you think it's good. ?

    @tracknutMar 08.2016 — I'm of the opinion that everyone on the planet should have a domain name and hosting, preferably when they are born. Just think, you can have an email address that NEVER changes, a place to put out your family photos, your resume, and every web site you've ever made.

  • 3. I find it hard to imagine your very first site being representative of your "portfolio", frankly. Make 10-20 practice sites, then make your portfolio site.
