I wanted to upgrade my computer’s memory from 1.0 Gig to 2.0, but was told that this could not be done as my OS is W98SE. Is this true?

@PeOfEoMay 08.2004 — its more of a hardware question then an os question. The question is how old is the motherboard and how much ram will it take. If the computer is pre atx, and does not use ddr ram, lets say sd, it will be hard because sd is going to be pretty expensive in large sticks because it is getting a tid bit rare. Most everyhing is ddr these days. There is some rd floating around, but that is pricy and most people just assume go for dual channel ddr. Id say, screw ram, get a new pc :p

@ray326May 08.2004 — Win98 can have problems with memory > 512M but there are work arounds on MS and other sites. I agree with PeOfEo that you really should consider just getting a new PC or at least a MB/CPU upgrade AND an OS upgrade if you're running things that consume 2G.

@DaveSWMay 08.2004 — In addition to that, the benefits of lots of RAM in Win98 follows a curve. At the low end more ram means better performance. Once you get to 512 the curve starts leveling out and you're wasting your time.

@riversdaleauthorMay 08.2004 — I actually upgraded my MB to Gigabite GA-7VT600-L40006 with AMD-XP-3000+OEM CPU and 3x512Mb DDR-400 Crucial Tech memory, but still W98SE will not work. I was quite annoyed and thought it was the fault of the chap who builds my computers. I did my posting in order to find out whether there was a way of using W98SE with this new configuration. I now run W 2000 Professional.

if you do that you will need a new atx powersupply, will want a new agp 8x video card and will need an atx case lol. So basically get a new computer!

My motherboard crapped its pants, its packed up in a box and getting send off the the newegg rma office. I have all of my parts sitting out on a clear part of my desk.

I well get a repaired or new msi neo 648L

and my proc is a p4 2.6 w/ 800mhz fsb, 512L2 cache, and ht.

Ram: 786, 512 is a geil gold dragon, cas is 2.5, 256 is kingston hyperx, it had a cas of 2, but I manually set the cas in bios so as it would run at 2.5 so that it would not crash everything the 512 gets loaded up and the 256 starts taken some load. Both a ddr400 / pc 3200

thats my stats in a nut shell.

@PeOfEoMay 08.2004 — what that I had a clear part area on my desk. Or that I put my processor, ram, video card, hsf, and sound card there?

Wood is not going to pick up a static charge nor is it conductive, since I could not find my static pack where else am I gonna put it? ?

@ray326May 08.2004 — The suspicious claim was that of having a clear place on your desk.

@PeOfEoMay 09.2004 — well its where my case was, which is now on a clear spot on my floor by my desk. Can you believe I can walk through my room? (In most parts of it)

@CardboardHammerMay 10.2004 — Here's the trick to getting Win 98 to function with more than 512MB of RAM: http://support.microsoft.com/?id=253912

He must've already done that to be running a gig without having major issues.
