I’ve been a lurker here for some time and am very impressed with your site…recently I’ve decided to venture into PHP and am at the very early beginner stages of learning.

I’ve used the search option here and read many posts concerning PHP and editors…I’m looking for an editor that’s learning curve is not too overwhelming for a beginner, one that works with HTML, XHTML, PHP, and etc., and one that has enough features that I won’t completely outgrow it in a very short time frame.

I would rate my HTML skills currently as advanced beginner…I know the editor question has been posted by many here so I apologize in advance for its redundancy…Thanks in advance for any help yo may be able to offer this beginner?

@ParagonauthorApr 11.2004 — I settled in for the time being on TSW Webcoder 4 and while I'm not at the level of any of you guys, I'll have to say I'm quite impressed with the interface and features of this freeware. Have any of you used it and is there anything about this product good or bad you could tell me about?

@crh3675Apr 11.2004 — I use EditPlus http://www.editplus.com/. It has great built-in FTP capability and many, many syntax files

@shimonApr 11.2004 — yes, yes, yes!! Editplus is Simply The Best.

(i authored the PHP5 syntax file myself ?)

I cannot understand why would anyone use Notepad? Who has that much time spare? Amazing really. Cant understand it ?

Well, it doesn't take 65+ seconds to load it (slow computer ?), and I don't need syntax highlighting. I script as fast as I type, which is around 80 words per minute, so I'm sure there wouldn't be much of a difference in how long it takes me to do something if I use some syntax highlighting program. In fact, it'd probably slow me down, because Notepad loads insantly, but other programs always take too long to load.

@shimonApr 11.2004 — hmm no - I must protest! Editplus doesn't take more that 2 secs to startup even on this piece of crud I have to sit behind!

And that wasn't even my point - I was wondering which busy developer has the time to live without syntax highlighting, tabbed editing, a 100% customisable interface and hell even FTPediting is priceless if your client has no cash in the bank... If I would use Notepad, I know I would leap out the window after 5 minutes in this job!

But I admit that's a matter of taste anyway. You script as fast as you type? Damn I guess your employer doesn't ask for data models, logical diagrams and use cases then...

That's a laugh. I always have rich clients (usually investors lol ?), and they like me too much not to pay me. Plus, I hate FTP more than my dog. :p

I'm kind of freelance, actually. I run my own business from an office at my house. And don't get me wrong, I can type 80 words per minute, and I can script 80 "words" per minute, but in the same way that I sometimes pause while I'm typing, I also often pause (to think lol) wihle I'm scripting. But most of the time, I know exactly what I'm doing, so I don't have to stop much. ?

@shimonApr 11.2004 — Well yeah...last thing i want is to get off on the wrong foot here...uh...

i) FTP editing - agreed, but if you need some quick n' dirty changes that (for whatever reason) can't go via CVS or even SSH, it's priceless

ii) yeah i know about rich clients (see my posts passim) and I know enough about them to know that sometimes even bluechips are going to put you in the position where point i) is painfully relevant :-/

iii) 'pause to think'? yes of course, I'm rather glad you do! the web is a valuable place old chap! I guess we come from different angles on this then - I'm from a software engineering background (yeah, I know). I tend to find that the pausing is more important that the typing...

@JonaApr 11.2004 — lol. I guess some people - "clients" - can get picky and hold their bills, but in that case I just tell 'em I don't need their money, and they can make the site themselves. :p Usually makes 'em change their mind, lol.

@shimonApr 11.2004 — um, well, no i wasn't really thinking about the money stuff, though I admit I mentioned it first - I'm sorry if I misled u there (its not my side of things, we have project managers and finance muppets and that sort of thing!). God knows I get paid the same meagre salary whatever :-/

Just that if u have to make changes to some company's site (sometimes described as a 'maintenance agreement' while u develop their new one), and they have a crappy hosting arrangement on some crappy windoze box somewhere, and the only access you have is thru FTP, then EditPlus has the power to make you feel slightly less miserable about this awful turn of events ?

that is all ?

@jontheman12Apr 12.2004 — i dont care about That editplus thing! Notepad is easy and you dont gotta crap up your computer downlaoding editminus off the internet and getting spam because you had to register for it. Notepad is better. it will teach you the weblanguage your trying to learn better than editminus because it doesnt do anything for you.
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@neenach2002Apr 12.2004 — If you already know the language you are programming, than you can use one of the spiffy editors. It's just like a calculator...only use when when you've learned math.?
