Server on my computer/ advice/ tutorials

Hello all… I want to install Apache or something on my computer, as well as some version of PHP so that I can practice PHP and test scripts without having to deal with FTP/ uploading/ T35 and all that.
I have yet to find a tutorial, and seeing as I have no idea where to begin, I was wondering if anyone here could link me, or tell me what to do.. or maybe this was already answered in another thread and I just didn’t see it in the search results…
