return a javascript value from dialog to php code

i’m trying to work on a simple dialog box that will pop up if a file exists. if the user presses yes, the file will be overwritten, but if the user presses no, the action is aborted.

is it possible that this can be done without writing the yes/no value to the window.location or having to refresh the page and use $_GET to get the value?

so the logic would be something like this:
if (file_exists($file))
{
echo “javascript:ShowDialog Yes / No; onclick = return Yes/No value”;

if(ShowDialog ==”Yes”)
{
overwrite file
}

if (ShowDialog ==”No”)
{
exit();
}

}
