Making website viewable on cell phone

Hello,

I’ve heard there is a way to add a code or format to an existing website to make it 100% viewable to fit on a cell phone screen. I guess is shrinks it by a certain percent or something. Anybody know anythiing about this?

Thanks,
MonaE

@steelersfan88Mar 27.2004 — save your index page as index.txt; therefore, there can be nothing that cell phones can't understand.

Does that mean if you don't convert the document to the correct format, it won't display on Mobile Phones, PDA's, and the like?

Hmmm... I always thought if a semantic document, styled with CSS, was happened upon by a person with a web enabled cell phone, they would just get plain text.

@buntineMar 27.2004 — I think WML is the standard. So while its possible to use other methods -- they are not as accessible and widely accepted. Or something like that..:p

Regards.

@SamMar 28.2004 — I was under the same impression as Paul. note this ALA article. It appears that if you design with web standards the content will be perfectly accessible to handheld devices...

@PeOfEoMar 28.2004 — Asp.net mobile controls would be easier would they not? I mean that would take care of the WAP stuff and adapt if for palm, black berry, and pocket pc too.

.NET Mobile

.NET Mobile is an extension to Microsoft ASP.NET and the Microsoft's .NET Framework.

.NET mobile is a set of server-side Web Forms Controls to build applications for wireless mobile devices, like web phones and PDAs.

These controls produce the different output for different devices by generating WML 1.1, HTML 3.2, or compact HTML.

sure you are going to need a lil wml in your code but this is going to make the page more inteligent by varying the output for the device with the user agent. That is all automated you would not have to code in the stuff for that.

@SamMar 28.2004 — the only point I see for WAP is if you're designing a site explicitly for wireless devices... If not, why not just create something to deliver the content to everyone?

@steelersfan88Mar 28.2004 — of course this is where you step in peo, because asp.net is om topic, haha. for all the phones and mobile devices that don't support images and evrything, please refer to the original reply (by me).

well yes... sites are made specifically for cellular phones, regular sites are not adapted. Its not an issue of screen size (contrary to popupar belief) most of the time, but rather data. Even if the images on your site can fit on the phones if you have too many the phone will not display the size because it is only going to download so much because it has space reserved for other things and it can't cache that... it only has a little space to begin with.
