dvorak keyboards

I know, its a bit strange for a seasoned QWERTY typist to make the change to DVORAK, but after much research I’ve decided to go for it. Thing is, though, when learning to type I wasnt given a choice on layout. I, like most of us, was forced to use a layout that was designed to slow typists down in the mechanical typewriter age so the keys wouldn’t jam!! lol But what are your thoughts??

@steelersfan88Mar 26.2004 — I would never be able to make that kind of change, especially since DVORAK keys are even close on the qwerty keyboard!

@PhillMcauthorMar 26.2004 — lol, thats what I thought, but I started yesterday & am excelling fast. ?

@SamMar 27.2004 — I made the change and love it...

typed 70wpm querty, and now i type 105wpm dvorak. its great. the most helpful thing you can do is to get out a flathead screwdriver, pop all your keys off, and reorganize them correctly (dvorak style)

@Paul_JrMar 27.2004 — Why make the change? What's wrong with the QWERTY keyboard? And why change if you are already a proficient typist with the QWERTY keyboard?

Faster is better...

typed 70wpm querty, and now i type 105wpm dvorak.[/QUOTE]

See? lol ?

Also, it's less work. It's set up so that hands alternate more & fingers move less distance for common words. ?

@Paul_JrMar 27.2004 — Hmm... this is interesting. I can touch-type fairly well on a QWERTY keyboard.

How exactly would I go about switching, if I wanted to? I would obviously need a new keyboard, but how would I go about getting my system to recognize the Dvorak configuration?

@SamMar 27.2004 — you don't need a new keyboard, you can just pop the keys off your current one and reorganize them. What operating system do you have?

in windows XP, you enable dvorak like this:

Control Panel -> Regional and Language Options -> Languages tab -> Details -> Add -> OK -> Apply

after this, dvorak is enabled

you can quickly switch between the two layouts with Left Alt+Shift

@PhillMcauthorMar 27.2004 — No, you dont have to get a new keyboard; just tell your OS to treat your QWERTY as a DVORAK.

I have an ANYKEY keyboard, so I just reprogrammed mine. ?

@Paul_JrMar 27.2004 — Wow, awesome! Now I am definitely going to try this out. ?

Thanks a lot!

@SamMar 27.2004 — glad to help

here's the layout, just incase you haven't found one yet:

http://www.mwbrooks.com/dvorak/layout.html

note the placement of <'s and >'s, much more efficient for hand coding (x)html

@PhillMcauthorMar 27.2004 — Thanks Sam, I couldn't find it!! lol.

I'm already touch typing, BTW ?

@Paul_JrMar 27.2004 — Might this require a restart? I've added the Dvorak layout, but nothing has changed.

***EDIT***

I switched the default to Dvorak, and now it works, but I can't seem to switch back with the prescribed keyboard shortcut.

@PhillMcauthorMar 27.2004 — its either LEFT CTRL+SHIFT OR ALT+SHIFT

EDIT::

I just enabled it on my system, you have to define a keyset to switch between layouts.

@Daniel_TMar 27.2004 — Ok, I just tried this for about 5 mins, and I've had enough! Perhaps it would be easier if my keyboard were labeled correctly. I have to refer to the guide on every letter!

@Paul_JrMar 27.2004 — I've got it working and everything, but I haven't tried to type anything out except my first name. ?

Do you think it's worth it to switch, even if you still use the standard QWERTY keyboard? I might get a Kinesis contoured keyboard, since it seems to be more oriented towards the Dvorak keyboard configuration.

@PhillMcauthorMar 27.2004 — for me it is. My hands constantly ache, it'll do me good to slow down a bit for a while. I think the change would be worth it, I mean, the layout was designed to slow down typist b/c of the physicall limitations of mechanical typewritters. Well, I'm not on a typewritter, and I know I could be typing faster (understatment). In my opinon, after all the reading I have done on the layout, it should have taken over. It's the QWERTY layout that causes carpul tonal. From what I have read, a standard days worth of typing on a qwerty your hands and fingers move a distance of 20 miles. The EXACT same amount of typing on a DVORAK fingers only travel a distance just over a mile. So I definately think that it is worth it. ?
