why shtml? re-design

I have a prospect that has his site as a mixture of shtml and php pages. I am pretty proficient in what I do, but have no knowledge of shtml pages and I am wondering what is their purpose? I know they are concerning server side updates, but what does that mean in terms for a re-design of the site? Any help is greatly appreciated.

@felgallAug 12.2005 — shtml pages have SSI code in them. That means that part of the page is included from another file. It means that you can make changes in the included file and have the change reflected on all of the pages that include it rather than having to update each page separately.

@spufiAug 12.2005 — shtml pages are just web pages that use SSI. If you are using PHP to include all of your files, you can simply use the .php extension instead.

@thunder77authorAug 12.2005 — My main concern is how does this affect a re-design of the site? The site is awesome in terms of content, but the design is horrid. I am proposing to wrap the whole site in CSS and just design a much better UI. Am I going to run into major problems keeping the same functionality that is already in place?

Thanks for your replies either way, but please help if you can...

@BeachSideAug 13.2005 — It doesn't really... unless the SSI's contain the layout. Then you will have issues. If that is the case you will probably need to dig through those SSI's and either alter them to suit your needs for the redesign or switch it all to php, which would be the same thing except a whole lot of rewriting the code.

@thunder77authorAug 13.2005 — Cool, thanks. I'm hoping whoever did the site before wasn't a complete idiot...
