Is analyzing the process of competitor backlink details dead?

Nowadays most of online backlink checker tool does not show the correct backlinks of our competitor’s websites.It only show the backlink which have placed the links in their client website.So mostly we can not get our competitor’s website backlink details from the online tool.Is analyzing the process of competitor backlink details dead?
