voting scripts

Hi all,

This is my first post/thread here and I am really newbie as a web developer. I am trying to learn web developing by myself so please bear with me.

I am trying to build a very basic and generic web page that has a voting system (or should I say a voting script?) that would collect votes, saves them in a db, and allows me to show these votes graphically as histograms and pie charts. It is something similar to what we see in most news websites.

What do I need to do exactly?
I already know MySQL (well, I have a working knowledge I should say) and some PHP. I don’t mind JS though I don’t know it ?

I will appreciate it if you can direct me to some existing scripts, if any, or any book that may help me achieve this goal.
