SEO considers that social media participation is important for website ranking.
AboutUs picks up social media visibility (Web presence) in two social media: Google groups and Yahoo answers. The justification of this is that if people mention your website in these media it’s a reference of popularity. However these statistics can be very erroneous, as happens with Yahoo Answers and Google groups.
In the case of my website
Furthermore, while studying the social visibility of competitor websites through their Yahoo Answers statistics I found a very absurd situation that has nothing to do with website popularity/social media visibility. If you see languagesdotcom’s profile in AboutUs you’ll find it shows 1,343,072 links in Yahoo Answers, however if you go to see what produces those links you’ll notice the following:
“a website called Thai Language.com” (not languagesdotcom)
“www.polyglot-learn-languagedotcom” (not languagesdotcom)
“www.esl-languagesdotcom/en/gap-year” (not languagesdotcom)
“www.polyglot-learn-languagedotcom” (not languagesdotcom)
“www.babies-and-sign-languagedotcom” (not languagesdotcom)
“www.polyglot-learn-languagedotcom” (not languagesdotcom)
“www.start-american-sign-languagedotcom” (not languagesdotcom)
“
“www.ielanguagesdotcom/languages.html” (not languagesdotcom)
“
“www.polyglot-learn-languagedotcom” (not languagesdotcom)
The first set of 10 questions relate to other websites that contain “languagedotcom” in their name, but none of them is languagesdotcom. In the 7th and 10th set you find the same situation. Yahoo Answers is no reference for social visibility of this website, least is it a reference of social value of this website. This website doesn’t even answer Yahoo questions.
With Google groups the situation is even worse. This website has 491 links with Google groups built on the following key words:
“languages” (not languagesdotcom)
“programming languages” (not languagesdotcom)
“change languages com-pletely” (not languagesdotcom)
“programming languages
Com Sci 221” (not languagesdotcom)
“Once you have mastered a second language other languages com much easier.” (not languagesdotcom)
And this is just the first page. So this websites social reputation is built on luck or highjacking.
So, can someone tell me why does AboutUs consider this statistic (Yahoo Answers or Google Groups) as a reference for the social media visibility of a website or its social reputation.
This is specially annoying considering that websites, or their owners, really involved in social interaction in the Internet, collaborating in their field of competence with other users, contributing with support and knowledge, producing original and creative material, valuable content, are simply ignored by the SEO analysis machines, traffic ranking alphanumeric bums, and backlink blind-bots.
Does this mean that the only way to have a good social reputation among search engines is to have a website with a name that includes “language” (or a similar generic word) in it, and will be pushed up the ladder?
If AboutUs.com gets the wrong statistics, do Google Rank, Alexa and Compete also fail to show the real social reputation of a website and with it give wrong rankings?
