Difference between onClick and <script> tags?

Why can I get my functions to run from a .js source file with <script> tags, but not from onClick?

This works:
<script>var com_pane = window.open(“blank11.html”,”com_pane”,”height=500,width=300,resizable”);
waitshow();</script>

This doesn’t:
<a href=’#’ onClick=’var com_pane = window.open(“blank11.html”,”com_pane”,”height=500,width=300,resizable”);
waitshow();’>Print hello, please.</a>

Or do I need the script tags in the onClick statement?

u don;t need <script> tag onclick event

just write this code:

<a href = "#" onclick= "window.open('pg.htm','widow name','hight=500,width=500')">

Success!
