Javascript reading HTML

I currently assist in a webpage class at my school, the instructor must grade these pages based on guidelines he has set for these novice, dare I call them webmasters. I would like to develope some sort of javascript or a simple script that would analys web page code to check for the existence of HTMl tags. Is there anyway to do this? Any ideas? Thanks in advance

@EonasdanauthorDec 08.2005 — that is sort of what i'm looking for, however I would like to customize what it searches for. The intstructor gives the students a list of things he wants on the page. The student must be these things on the page or points will be deducted. For instance the page must have an image. I want the script to check a given htm/l document for the <img> tag.

<img><src="asfd.jpg"></img>??? in that case you would find an image tag, the code for checking all those possible combinations could be very complicated. Besides if they do make an error, the instructor should tell them what has happened
