This may sound like a strange question but it’s something I’ve been mulling over and was just wondering if people could give me any supposed pros and cons of it.
Basically in my site user’s upload photos. Each user has a profile within which the photos they’ve uploaded can be displayed. The url for such a page at the moment is this:-
mysite.com/username/photos/7
With the number at the end being the id of the photo.
There is also a photos section where users can simply view photos posted by all users acting as a repository for all photos which uses urls like this:-
mysite.com/photos/7
However I’ve came across several sites that have a similar theme, most notably facebook which rather than show the photos relative to the author user’s profile at all instead they ONLY simply link to a photo.php page like this:-
facebook.com/photo.php?{variables related to photo, album and author get passed here}
They seem to do this for all photos i.e. they never do something like this:-
facebook.com/username?sk=photos&photoid=2
Is there any benefit/downsides in doing this the way they have done it and is it the best method? My idea was for photos to appear as if they are being displayed within the profile of the user who posted them rather than linking elsewhere to a photo.php page although admittedly such a page would make things easier.
