Anyone know how to make a site validate the user’s browser and if it’s not a specific browser version, redirect or show a message? I would like to prevent IE6 and under users from accessing the page and either redirect them to their browser’s main page for updating, or tell them they cant enter.

Putting a warning message on the page for IE5-6 users is fine. Just don't prevent them from accessing your content.

but i do agree with Kravvitz.

blocking users with IE6 older browsers from your site is absurd.

i'd be furious if I ever came across that on the web.

@WebJoelOct 29.2007 — Or a javascript [I]browser sniffer[/I] that detects what user-agent the client is using (mozilla/firefox, opera, netscape, konqueror, safari, and specific versions of them thereof, -etc), and this sniffer provides a page built for them. This works even for non-IE browsers, as 'conditionals' only target versions of IE.

I've used those 'sniffers' before, but one has to assume that javascript is present and/or turned-on..

Mostly though, -I'd try to built pages that deliver content in at least the most minimal form, for every user-agent.
