How to learn the "new" web look?

In the last years, many web pages have taken on a new look; in part due to more use of JavaScript. Google’s Gmail is a good example along with some forums.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a book or online tutorial where some of the techniques are explained?

My suggestion is to google "free css templates" and download a few. Tinker with them, read a few how to guides and you should pick it up quite easily.

PS: Forums tend to use PHP bulletin systems. Webdeveloper and many others pay to use vbulletin. You can use phpbb for free, bit of a pain to set up though if you dont know what you're doing ....

@LiveCityAug 24.2011 — Also, content is presented dynamically (using AJAX or otherwise) instead of being "crammed" altogether - and JavaScript is becoming more prominent. Many websites are now using JavaScript frameworks, such as jQuery and MooTools to make the contents 'dynamic' and not static.

Also, CSS3 and HTML5 elements are making websites look more professional, without having to design every little bit.

You can Google whatever is closer to your field of expertise, and never stop learning ?
