Career advice?

Hello everybody,

I’m looking for advice on how to further my career in the Web industry, judging on what I know already.

Currently my experience is that of a Web Designer, since I have used HTML/CSS since the age of 14 (now 22) and have used Photoshop and Illustrator.

However, due to deteriorating sight (I’m slowly going blind) I’m finding it difficult to find work as a web developer since many jobs in my local area require you know and can use Photoshop/Illustrator etc. I know what I’m doing as a Front End Developer. and trying to learn PHP and packages such as WordPress and Drupal.

Because of my limits now, and have been doing business in such a way that I hire technical teams of designers and developers and I personally oversee projects and liaise with clients I’ve used the title of Web Consultant, since that seems more fitting for what I do.

But I’ve found the term Web Consultant to be somewhat off-putting to some prospects and now I’m stuck in “fear” (more hesitation) to carry on. The Web is what I know best and would like to continue my career in the industry, but not sure which route to go.

Anybody got any advice on what route to take and what title would be best suited to what I do and how I conduct the services I provide?

If you need any further information I’m happy to elaborate. And any questions are welcome.

@WonDer9Jul 12.2011 — Stop considering yourself as not apart of the team. Consultant is more of someone who tells you what you already know. Like n the mob or just every day business. A second opinion to help you make decisions.

You know this, but the point I'm trying to make is that many teams(web-development) have some one who finds jobs and promotes them. You should consider yourself more of a Project Manager then consultant. You are a part of the team, just in a bigger picture.

You are doing what you are suppose to, I just think your outlook is a little dispirited. We all have ups and downs, it will pick up just go hard, and read a book on marketing to help you re-imagine your brand and image. And focus on who you want your clients to be in the future.

sometimes its the people you work for and what you don't get out of it that put you down. time for a game changer don't you think. hate to say it but this is what fuels capitalism, just lousy clients.

I'm currently in between careers to trying to do it all by myself. It would be good to join a team but currently I have to get my skills up to par. But I'm amassing as much info and experience as I can, so when I do I'm ready.

Good luck and if you can try contacts.
