Best Career Options/Choices

What’s going on all,

Okay so, here’s the lowdown… I’m currently majoring in health informatics (basically deals with managing health information data when dealing with medical records – primarily the electronic health records <EHR>). In any event, there is a huge push for EHR’s to be implemented in the healthcare setting and currently, no standard exists that will easily allow hospitals to share data (health records) with one another. There is a huge demand for health informatics personnel to know a programming language, as most EHR’s are needed to be managed by those who can manipulate the data to gather information (rate of which patients fall out of bed, prescribing errors, disease registries etc.). My professors have acknowledged that any programming language can be used in conjunction with EHR’s to accomplish said task above.

My question is, if I was wanting to make web based applications that can be used to streamline the data to correlate with real time trends, which programming language would be best? I’ll give an example, say I am a hospital administrator who is filling out a report for insurance companies and they want to know how their hospital is performing when compared to another similar hospital. I would want to make an application that will allow the hospital administrator to see the past data and compare it with current, trending data so to be aware of what measures to take to improve upon a certain criteria??

I know it seems relatively complex, but any and all help would be greatly appreciated! I do NOT know any specific programming language, but I have worked with dreamweaver in the past to create a website.

@Big_O_1_Jun 07.2011 — To create a web application you can use any language. There is no one "best" language except the one that works best for you. Common server side languages are PHP, C#, Ruby, Java and Coldfusion. Each have their pros and cons. I personally prefer PHP and Ruby on Rails. Choosing a language is the easy part. Learning to be a programmer is the difficult part. The concepts are the same among all languages, only the syntax is different among them.

What kind of work have you done with dreamweaver? I'm guessing just the front end (HTML, CSS, JavaScript). The health application you have described sounds like it will require a lot of back end scripting along with a database. To create the entire application you will need the front end skills, a server side scripting language, and a database such as MySQL, Oracle, or Microsoft SQL.

@gblaznseeauthorJun 10.2011 — With dreamweaver I've done mostly css/html and the like. I've also worked with some MySQL before, database (MS access? - excuse the ignorance, complete amateur at this) and few others that of which I do not recall. Once I graduate, I am considering going to the local community college and get a certificate in either web programming, java or c++. Which one however, is something that I have not decided upon and thus, the reasoning behind my seeking counsel on the matter. I appreciate your reply and sharing what you know.. Like I said, complete amateur at work here ?

@kim-bJun 11.2011 — I think this is really a good area to venture on. I have a family with a lot of doctors and I think they would need a revamp in how they handle things.

I know with reps, they are pretty advanced with how they deal with information regarding meds and doctors but in another case, they would have to step up.

And if you are venturing to this, I think you would have a good shot. I have been hearing the off the shelf systems do not really cater to specific needs and they could use an expert to work on the field.
