META Tag question

Normally when I write the meta keywords and description, I normally do not put spaces between the comma and the next entry. Example: <meta name=”keywords” content=”webdesign,webdeveloper,webmaster” />

I was told that the comma is what separates the info. Does putting a space between the comma and the next entry really make a difference?

Of course I understand that Google doesn’t consider meta keywords, but for other search engines.

Any advise?

@WebJoelDec 24.2010 — I believe that the W3C specification for meta data is comma-separated (word,word2,word3,etc.)

I don't consider it to be too critical either way. Some social-sharing site mandate 'whitespace' separation and no commas but they probably parse the keywords to the Search Engines using their own algorithm.

As for Google not use meta tags, they in fact do. They may penalize a site if abused, but they are actually helpful. Google certainly shows a few tutorials on how to construct correct meta tags, ergo they must be using them.

I believe the OP was referring to the "keywords" meta-tag, which to my knowledge Google does not use. Here is Google's "SEO Starter Guide" for example, and while they refer to keywords in the document, they always discuss them in context of putting them in the *content* of the site. And while they discuss META tags, they only refer to the "description" tag as relevant to SEO.
