this is quite clear.... but how the link itself and its presence works for the rank? will be counted?

one million dollar question!

@mickeyyJan 19.2010 — I've heard at least one SEO expert say that even Nofollow links do still pass rank. Nofollow links don't influence your rank directly, but they help to improve your traffic and traffic is one of the reasons of your top position.

@tonygreg123Jan 21.2010 — Google is saying correct no doubt no follow links does not crawl by search engines but user can reach your website through these links mean more traffic and this is our main core for our websites.

@Christophe27Jan 23.2010 — Hi,

When using nofollow Google won't add the value of the link to your pagerank. I'm a official contributar of Google SEO groups, and I'm pretty sure about this ;-)

The reason your website still ranks high will have other causes. Perhaps it is just a great website ?

Best,

Christophe

@markrobinsonJan 29.2010 — I am agreed with you.No follow link are also important.If you look some high pr site,they have also no follow link but they have high rank and traffic also.Its basically depend on search algorithm on which any search engine work.

@nanclinFeb 17.2010 — Hello,

Webmasters are aware of the fact that link building is the most important part of the SEO process. For this reason some of them started to post unrelated advertisements to weblogs and forums. These advertisements usually contain one or more links to their websites. This way they are trying to get higher pagerank and better ranking in search engines. This is one of the dirtiest black hat tactics around and people doing that are known as spammers. To minimize this sort of spam google developed nofollow attribute.

Thanks.

Yes, this is one of the reasons Google provides the nofollow attribute. Another reason is for payed advertising where you put a link to another website (usually with a banners) because somebody payed you, and not because you find the website worth to link to ?

@onlinemarketingMar 19.2010 — I think they are still worthy but worth less than DoFollow links.
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@tarzan10Mar 19.2010 — It is important to have nofollow links also because they make your link building look more natural. It wouldnt look natural if you only had dofollow links. It also doesnt look natural to only have high PR links.

@svidgenMar 19.2010 — Let's not forget that there's a two-way effect here, as well. Google will penalize a site for linking to low quality sites, unless the links are nofollow links. And while most search engines will still follow the link, many will refrain from exchanging any Ranking data between the pages. For a site with user-generated content or links, this is very, very good.

Under normal conditions, links to unpopular or "spammy" sites serve to discredit your own site. In addition, a significant quantity of links on a single page will do the same--it's an indication that the page has no value of its own. But, if those links are nofollow links, [most] search engines assume that they're user-submitted links, not necessarily related to the page content.

I can't say how much of a difference this makes, of course. But, I would definitely recommend using nofollow for all user-submitted links.
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@Jarrod1937Mar 19.2010 — It has been stated by various search engines that they will still follow a given link of a page even if it has the nofollow link attribute. Doing otherwise would lead to the search engine itself being less effective. However, keep in that that it is still up to the search engines discretion on whether or not it chooses to give value to that link. The link with the nofollow attribute may still get some value, it may just be devalued by comparison. But it is definitely a good idea to automatically nofollow user submitted links (if you even want to make them links and not just escaped text), as this deters spamming.
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@svidgenMar 21.2010 — Google disagrees:

http://static.googleusercontent.com/external_content/untrusted_dlcp/www.google.com/en/us/webmasters/docs/search-engine-optimization-starter-guide.pdf

Under the "nofollow" section, it states the following ...

Nofollowing these useradded links ensures that you're not giving your page's hard-earned reputation to a spammy site. ... If you're willing to vouch for links added by third parties (e.g. if a commenter is trusted on your site), then there's no need to use nofollow on links; however, linking to sites that Google considers spammy can affect the reputation of your own site.
You can't say they're worthless. What about all of the other search engines? You could be throwing it away for the other 20% of your search engine traffic.

@wordgeistApr 26.2010 — I have a question for you guys, if in my site all outbound links are no follow this help no "share" the ranking of my site?

@m3itelecomMay 04.2010 — No follow links prevent passing Page Rank to the destination link also prevent the destination link from being crawled.However no follow links donot prevent the link from being recorded as a back link.

@svidgenMay 04.2010 — No follow links prevent passing Page Rank to the destination link also prevent the destination link from being crawled.
Not completely true. Many crawlers will still follow the link and index the page. Most engines will prevent ranking data associated with the source page to be reflected in the destination page. And few if any crawlers will completely ignore nofollow links.

@theiconMay 11.2010 — there not useless. they can still bring in some traffic if theyre put in the right place.
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@babor7111Jun 15.2010 — No follow links are definitely "worth" less. As far as traffic goes, they are exactly the same at do follow links, a link will bring you traffic no matter what. But as mentioned before, Google will not count no follow links as the engine does not crawl them.

But they don't hurt, that's for sure!
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@TerranceJun 22.2010 — No, they help in other search engines and they possibly help in google depending upon who you ask.

@cogzidelJul 02.2010 — As far as the search engine is concerned, no follow links are worth less and no use. Sometimes, it will rank in the top position, but it will not be permanent for long time.

@Jack_SwaggerJul 03.2010 — if the site or page pass relevant so it is worth less. and search engines are not follow the link or not consider the links with nofollow attribute.

@JaneKubooJul 14.2010 — It is hard to say. Maybe little effect for you websites.
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@JonasHastingsJul 16.2010 — I would say it again, Nofollow links indirectly help you increase traffic giving you a PR boost and I think this is important as well. Just make sure that you are linking to nofollow authoritative sites also.
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@Inferno_str1keJul 26.2010 — It is important to have nofollow links also because they make your link building look more natural. It wouldnt look natural if you only had dofollow links. It also doesnt look natural to only have high PR links.
Not really; if people are naturally linking to your site why would they add the nofollow attribute on links pages, blogrolls or in-page links? On the other hand a huge number of nofollow links to your site across multiple domains probably means that you've been spamming forums or blog comments with links that have had an automatic nofollow attribute added.
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@andrewdavidAug 18.2010 — Google says that it do not give value to no-follow links. but Google never ever tells a truth. So it gives some value to no-follow links too. No-Follow links are also important in order to get traffic. so do not ignore them.

@getbestproductOct 30.2010 — some one may click the link...

@pwslinksNov 06.2010 — It means that they still have some value.
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@qpdNov 19.2010 — No-follow links are definitely worth less than do-follow links, but they are not worthless. They will still aid in driving traffic to your site so should not be ignored. However, since Google does not pass value to these links, it is better to focus on getting do-follow links.
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@noahqwDec 10.2010 — Google still takes into your links no matter if it's do-follow or no-follow. However, Google won't crawl the link if it's a nofollow link.
