Internet Explorer

I have this in the header of my web page.
<script type=”application/javascript”>
var max_count = 21;
alert (max_count);
window.onload = request_count;
</script>
max_count’s value is actually generated in php, so I thought the header would be the best place to put this. I normally works fine. The problem is that Internet Explorer does not execute this code. Does anyone know why?

Thanks, Dave
