How get element that’s been removed from document?

I have an element with an ID that is a child of an element that can be removed from the document.body. It still exists (it can be put back), but I can’t figure out a good way to find the child element. The best I can come up with is this (which is not efficient):
var possibleNodes = parent.getElementsByTagName( “div” );

//Then loop through…
while ( … )
{
if ( child.getAttribute( “id” ) == theID ) …
}
Is there a better way?
if ( child.id == theID )
may be more efficient, but can't you save the address of the child before it's removed?

@Four_StaplesJun 07.2009 — Use cloneNode to store it in a variable, then call it later when you need it.
