Variable literals or references?

Suppose I have this:
$x = ‘qwerty’;
$y = &$x;
$z = $y;
Will $z contain the actual value ‘qwerty’ or will it also be a reference to $x just like $y is?

Thanks

@MindzaiJun 02.2009 — $z will be the value of $y. If you were to change $x or $y, $z would still == 'qwerty', but $x and $y would == the new value.

@SnartmanauthorJun 02.2009 — Thanks. I guess $z = &$y is the way to go then.

@NogDogJun 02.2009 — Presumably you have some reason for this? After all, simply using $x without any references is simpler, cleaner, and easier to maintain/debug.
