Can I Find Specific Content In a File?

I’m trying to create a drop-down list on my site that displays the newest articles. Everything works perfectly except it shows the surfers my file name rather than some pertinent information. In other words they see “file_name_for_site.php”.

What I want is for php to look through the file and find the text that comes after “<span class=”headline”>” and before “</span>”. That way it will display the headline of the site, not the file name.

Can php read file info and hunt for specific content? If so, how?
