search engine/price comparison help and advice please!!

Hi all i have been using php to read product feeds and insert the data into my mysql database, which works fine for the smaller feeds, but when i get feeds with 5000+ items i get a 30 seconds maximum time exceeded error and only several of the items added to the database???

i was told that maybe i should use perl or ASP to do this as they dont have as many limitations, but unfortunatly i know nothing about these ?

can anyone help me with this, i can provide my php code if neccessary
