Industry Choking??

I decided on a graphic design program w/ a minor in CS to become a web developer/ designer. Now that I have decided and I am excited to get started I hear the industry is simply choking with web designer/ developers. Being a 40 year old women who is the breadwinner of my house, this scares me to no end, I will be honest about that. In the thread up above I was assured that if you are good and know your stuff there is plenty of work out there. I have dreamed of doing this for a very long time, but by the same token, I gotta eat and pay the rent.

I guess my question to the board is this, is the industry indeed choking? Is there a way to “hedge my bets” education wise so that I am able to get a decent job?

Thank you!

Kat

@drhowarddrfineSep 21.2008 — The industry is choked with pretenders, those who can cobble together a site from borrowed work but have no understanding how or why it does what it does.

@davadviceSep 22.2008 — i always say, you get for what you pay for ,

the reason i am getting in to this is that i have been asked several times over the last few months if i knew somone who could do Flash, job booking sites etc and i thought well as i don't know anyone i could personaly recomend, i could make the step from VB to web and make a few quid. i believe there is a market for this in the UK anyway how it is over the pond i can only imagine.

i also believe that you should never have all the eggs in the one basket. make sure you cover your but, I have 2 kids and wouldn't take the risk. if i didn't have them i would go for it. it totaly depends on your sircomstances.

regards

David

@dtm32236Sep 22.2008 — I've been doing freelance work for a while now (through a recruiting/headhunting firm)... and they are constantly calling me with new jobs.

Every company has a website and needs it maintained and/or redesigned. From what I see in the industry, there's definitely plenty of opportunity out there. I'd definitely like to hear other opinions though...

@LeeUSep 22.2008 — In addition, once you gain some knowledge, you can also make extra money writing freelance articles. For instance, we pay for freelance articles over on WebReference.com. There are many ways to bring income in this business. If you're good at what you do, you shouldn't have a problem. Do you know of Molly E. Holzschlag? She has been in the businnes for many years and is very successful. You might check out her Web site. She is involved with an organization of women in the Web design business.

@ckatgoauthorSep 24.2008 — Thank you everyone for your kind advice.

No, I have no kids to support, but I am the main provider for my hubby and I. I just don't want to get caught with a degree that is not going to yeild anything or very little once I am out. I don't have illusions of 6 figure income jobs, but it would be nice to make decent enough to do more than "get by" and deciding how best to do that has been difficult.

Once again, thank you!
