Joomla or DreamWeaver??

I am looking to develop a page, in which I design the page and then use a coder to place a function on that webpage (involving the usage of API). Should I use Joomla to build the website (I am finding that Joomla is very restrictive and does not give me much versatility in designing my webpage) or DreamWeaver, and which would it be easier for a coder to input a function into??

@ray326Jul 07.2008 — I'm afraid that's a non-sequitur like "Do you walk to school or carry your lunch?" If Joomla (a CMS) is what you need then that's what you use as your platform and the coder has to deal with it. If you don't need a CMS then why use Joomla in the first place?

@ffbizauthorJul 07.2008 — Thank you - I guess then I need to determine whether I need a CMS. I am developing an e-commerce website that a user will enter basic information on the website and that information will be transmitted to various companies via API and then a quote will be transmitted back from each of those companies, my website will sort and list each of the quotes on the webpage for the user to select the one they want and book the service. I plan on having a coder develop the coding and content that takes the input from the user, transmits it to all the companies, then receives the quote and sorts the results. My current plan is to design the website myself via Dreamweaver and leave appropriate space available in my tables on the webpages for the coder to place the coding for the functionality mentioned above. What do you think would be easier, in terms of overall website development and the ease of implementing the content produced by a coder, utilizing Joomla or using Dreamweaver in the fashion mentioned above (if what I am saying does not make sense, it is because I know very little about website development and coding in general)?

Thank you for any and all help

@NogDogJul 07.2008 — You might want to spend a little time at www.opensourcecms.com and "test dive" some of the various CMS type tools they have there, and see if there's one that fits your needs more closely than Joomla.

@ray326Jul 07.2008 — The functionality you mention should be done entirely on the server with rather thin linkages to the pages. If you haven't done so before do a little reading on model-view-controller and that should help with your overall vision.

@ffbizauthorJul 07.2008 — So then the only linkages to the pages should be the actual input and output displays from the functionality that I have the coder construct onto the webpages that I have made? If I have a coder build this type of content, would I have to give them access to my server and FTP? Because I am cautious of doing so since I plan to use a coder from Rent-A-Coder. Are there other methods of allowing a coder to build functionality on the server side without giving them actual direct access to my server?

Thank you both, you have been very helpful and patient with a amateur web developer like myself.

@ray326Jul 08.2008 — Require them to have their own server that matches the functionality of yours and tell them they'll be providing you an application that you will install. You may need to have a third party review their code to make sure they don't slip any back doors in on you or leave you open to SQL injection style attacks.
