Help with installing PHP

I need to install PHP on Windows XP Pro. I’m looking at this page http://www.php.net/downloads.php

I’m not sure what to do here, there’s PHP 5.2.6 Complete Source Code
PHP 5.2.6 Complete Source Code
PHP 5.2.6 (tar.bz2) [9,347Kb] – 01 May 2008
md5: 7380ffecebd95c6edb317ef861229ebd
PHP 5.2.6 (tar.gz) [11,764Kb] – 01 May 2008
md5: 1720f95f26c506338f0dba3a51906bbd

and there’s Windows Binaries. What are they?

Am I looking at the right place to install PHP?

@skywalker2208May 19.2008 — If you are downloading it for development work then why don't you download like Wamp or Xampp. This will give you PHP, Mysql and apache so you could write your php scripts.

@BenVitaleauthorMay 21.2008 — I have never installed Apache on my computer before. I know that Apache 2.2is notcompatible with Windows versions of PHP earlier than PHP 5.2.0

People who are using Mac OS X, the decision is simple -- Apache is already installed. But I'm a Windows user, and that means I need to do a bit more work to get things up and running. I read that XAMMP and WAMP have a good reputation as being stable and easy to install.

However, I read the following notice on the official PHP site

Warning:

There are several all-in-one installers over the Internet, but none of those are endorsedby PHP.net, as we believe that the manual installation is the best choice to have your system secure and optimised.

I have no experience working with XAMMP or WAMP, so I have no comment.

To install Apache, I'm planning to go to http://httpd.apache.org/download.cgi and selectfile marked Win32 Binary (MSI Installer), and if there's no link to the Windows binary, click "Other files" and then follow the links for binaries and Win32.

@ChazzlMay 21.2008 — Install Apache first.

I would recommend "PHP 5.2.6 installer [19,373Kb] - 6 May 2008" from the download page.

And grab yourself a copy of MySQL and "MySQL Query Browser" too.

@BenVitaleauthorMay 21.2008 — Thank you very much, guys, for the feedback.

I'm going to http://www.php.net/downloads.php

Instructions given to me:

to select PHP 5.2.x Installer from the Window Binaries section. The download is 19 MB.

Then, download php-5.2.x-win32-installer.msi from a mirror site, and save the file to my hard disk

Mirror site? What is that? I don't understand. This is the part I don't get.

Step 2:

Close all windows and double-click the php-5.2.x-win32-installer.msi file to launch the installation wizard.

@NogDogMay 21.2008 — If you are installing for a site that is to be publicly accessible via the web, or are simply interested in learning as much as possible about administering PHP sites, then by all means download all the pieces, read lots of documentation, do a lot of configuration file tweaking, and in a few days get it up and running (hopefully).

If, on the other hand, you just want to get a local test configuration up and running on your PC and have no interest in becoming a system administrator, WAMP or XAMPP will work just fine, and have you up and running in the time it takes to download the file plus about 10 minutes to run the installer. (I prefer WAMP myself for the user interface, but I've successfully used both.)

@BenVitaleauthorMay 22.2008 — Ok, I'll go with WAMP.

Now, there's the matter of choosing a good script editor for PHP.

It is my understanding that the criteria are :

  • - line numbering

  • - a "balance braces" features

  • - PHP syntax coloring

  • - PHP code hints

  • Choices?

    > Dreamweaver at www.adobe.com/products/dreamweaver/

    > GoLive CS2 at www.adobe.com/products/golive

    > Edit Plus 2 at www.editplus.com (which is available only for Windows)

    Which one do you recommend?

Then, I'll need my scripts checked with a file comparison utility. Either with Beyond Compare (www.scootersoftware.com) or WinMerge (http://winmerge.sourceforge.net)

@ChazzlMay 22.2008 — I currently use NuSphere PhpED and am very happy with it.

@BenVitaleauthorMay 23.2008 — I went to WAMP, on the second page (Apache Addons)

I downloaded Apache 2.2.8 (includes OpenSSL) )installed with WampServer 2)

After that I got a card flashing on my screen which read:

    Set Up

    Unable to execute file:

    c:wampwampmanager.exe

    ShellExecuteEx failed; code 2.

The system cannot find the file specified.

So could anyone tell me what went wrong?

    @BenVitaleauthorMay 26.2008 — I'm switching to XAMPP

    on page http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp-windows.html

    There are options

    > XAMPP

    > XAMPP add-ons

    > XAMPP Lite

    What do you recommend?

    Success!
