@gbonnetMay 13.2008 — Hi,

1st thing : link building is a long process ?

When I'm starting to work on the SEO of a website, once I'm sure the website itself is optimised, I start by analysing my competition : where do they get their links from ?

For that I use : http://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/

in the search bar enter the command : link:www.mycompetitor.com

(just replace mycompetitor.com with the proper domain name)

Then take a look at this post : http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=224828

That should be enough to get you started.

Regards

G.

that's a great suggestion from gbonnet. I ALWAYS study what the competition does for my clients.

It's also important to understand that some of those competitors may be using black hat or gray hat methods to get their links.

Whatever you do it's very important to ensure that the links you get back are good links. There are many web sites that will sell you links - a few are safe, but many are scams and Google penalizes sites for this now. So I would stay away from paying for links, unless that payment is for a press release.

Submitting press releases to sites like PRWeb.com and choosing their SEO level release service, you can gain hundreds of links - legitimate, reputable and worth the effort and cost. Releases do fall off after a few months so you'd need to re-submit a few a year.

But in the mean time you can be working to build long-term links all the while.

Posting articles or responses to blogs and forums and including a link to your own site like my blog is a good practice (though some blogs and forums automatically tag such links with a "rel:nofollow", thus negating the link for ranking purposes).

Look for web directories specific to the market your site is in where you can get listed.

If any of your market is based on local or regional offerings, then local and regional directories not focused on one market are also very valuable.

It's about time, patience and research.
