I have a bit of a quandry. I am trying to find a serch engine that:

Runs in JAVA, unless there is another language that would suffice. I program in Visual FoxPro and HTML. I am a hack in everything else.
Searches specified network folders for documents in various formats (MS Word, MS Excel, PDF, and HTML formats).
Searches external documents and web sites by a list of URLs.
Does not require any Spider, Crawler, etc. as this is an intranet and external access can not be granted.
Does not require CGI, Frontpage extensions, etc. as I will not get approval.
Currently I perform a search using Windows Explorer. I have a Word document that has key words for all of the external URLs so that they are included. This takes up to 5 minutes for an internal search only. Of course I get no % match, information, etc. This is not just tedious and of limited use; It is useless when I ask other staff to search this way.
Also, is it possible to search the contents of websites from a list of URLs in a particular document. I am thinking about usability after I leave.
I work in a government agency and can not use the Frontpage extensions for something as devious as a search page. 😡 But, I do want staff to have access to the documents cited without asking me to produce them.
